Incidents Of Rabies In Rensselaer County

A cat tested positive for the rabies virus in a populated area of Rensselaer County.  The cat was captured on September 4 in the area of Capitol Boulevard and Route 150 in Sand Lake.  Sick or rabid animals will demonstrate unusual behavior, such as no fear of humans, wandering around during daylight and wandering into residential areas.

If your domestic animal has wounds from an incident you did not see, prior to September 4, you should have the animal evaluated by your veterinarian.

A raccoon tested positive for the rabies virus in a populated area of Rensselaer County.  The raccoon was captured on September 14, in the area of Highland Ave. and Bleecker Ave. in the City of Troy.  Typically, raccoons will feed out of dumpsters, garbage cans and on food left out for other animals.  Therefore, the County Health Department reminds residents of the importance of securely covering their garbage cans.  

Keeping pets up to date on rabies vaccinations is also very important. This not only to protects the pets but also protects family members from potential exposure to rabies and the post-exposure rabies shots.

Rensselaer County Officials are reminding residents of the precautions, as well as the steps to follow if you or someone in your care comes into contact with an animal that could be rabid.

Rabies exposure can include a bite, a scratch or saliva contact with a rabid animal.

Residents should avoid contact with wild or stray animals.

Report all animal bites or contact with wild animals to the Rensselaer County Department of Health for follow-up.

Although rabies is normally transmitted through a bite or scratch of an infected animal, the virus can be transmitted by contact with saliva through mucous membranes (such as eyes or nose) or through broken skin. Therefore it is important to remember if your pet or any animal is attacked or wounded by a potentially rabid animal, to protect yourself first and never handle the wounded animal with your bare hands.

Story Time At The Grafton Community Library

Pre-school story time for children 2-4 years of age will be held on Wednesday, September  24, at 10 am at the Grafton Community Library. The 45-minute program consists of read-aloud stories and a small craft project to take home.

Extra Helpings Sets Ordering Dates For Stephentown

The Extra Helpings Community Food Buying Club in Stephentown will take orders on Thursday, October 2, from 3:30 to 6 pm at the Stephentown Federated Church on Garfield Road. The Extra Helpings program is part of the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. It allows anyone to buy nutritious food at lower than retail prices. There are no limits on age, income, number of bundles or geography so all smart shoppers are welcome and encouraged to participate. You may also order when picking up your September order on September 25. 

 The October choices are a $21 basic bundle containing 1.5 lbs. bacon wrapped pork medallions (4 6-oz.), 2 lbs. bag of chicken tenders, a 1 lb. pkg. of sirloin sandwich steaks, 2 lbs. pre-seasoned meatloaf mix, 3 lbs. bag apples and 20 oz. peeled butternut squash. Special #1 is a 5 lb. block of sliced American cheese for $13. Special #2 is an assortment of stuffed pasta for $15.50 – 18 oz. stuffed shells, 12 oz. sun-dried tomato stuffed rigatoni, 12 oz. spinach-stuffed rigatoni, 13 oz. large round ravioli, 16 oz. tri-color tortellini, 18 oz. manicotti, 13 oz. pirogie with potato, Swiss and jack cheeses and 2 qts. Casa Visco spaghetti sauce. The meat box for $32 contains 2 lbs. netted pork roast, 3 1 lb. pkgs. of stew beef, 3 1 lb. pkgs. of 90/10 ground beef, 2 lbs. breakfast sausage links and two 1.5 lb. pkgs. of chicken tenders.

Cash payment must be made when ordering. A $1 per customer delivery fee is requested to cover transportation costs. The pick up date is Thursday, October 23, from 3:30 to 6 pm at the Stephentown Federated Church. You may have another person order or pick up your order, but any food not claimed during the pick-up hours will be donated to the food pantry. Bowling Coaching Clinic At Barbecue Recreation

Johnsonville Ambulance Squad Ham Dinner

The Johnsonville Volunteer Ambulance Squad will be holding its 46th Annual Ham dinner on Sunday, Sept. 28, during the hours of 12 and 3 pm. There is open seating with take-outs available. The cost is $9 for adults, $5 for children 5-12 and free for  kids under 5. Tickets are available from any Squad member or by calling 753-6011.

Oil Raffle Tickets And Balloons For Chris’ Wish

Colorful balloons will be sold at the HFCS football game on Friday, September 19. Proceeds will benefit Chris’ Wish. A diving accident this summer has left 19 year old Chris Luciano paralyzed from the waist down.

While Chris can no longer walk, his ultimate wish is to get out of the wheel chair and snowboard again.  Project Walk (www.projectwalk.org) an organization in San Diego offers an opportunity to help get him out of this chair. It is boot camp designed to regain any movement. Chris, his friends and family would like to send him to this program. They are fund raising to make this wish a reality.

George’s Wife Lucinda Injures Her Head

Saturday, June 1, 1850: Today I took my one horse wagon and carried my wife and daughter Charlotte to the Christian Chapel to conference meeting. On the way home I called to Mr. Leonard’s the tailor by trade and bargained with him to hire his boy by the name of Edwin to work for me four months at six dollars per month. This evening or nearly night, my wife hit her head against a door catch and hurt it bad, it struck her nerves and went through her whole system and was chilled with ague and bad pain in the head, Tonight after we were all abed and asleep Rensselaer Sheldon came and got his trunk. He quit work for Geo P. on Friday morning the 24th of May. Nelson Perkins came with said Sheldon after the trunk.

Friday, June 7: I sowed the oats and the grass seed in the young orchard on the hill. Today in the middle of the day we washed our sheep near the Douglass bridge on side the road on Daniel Gardner’s land. I put them in the water, my two sons and Edwin Leonard washed them. I killed one sending it in the water.

Monday: This forenoon or part of the forenoon my two sons and Edwin Leonard worked on the highway and it was rainy. We had the ox team to work on said highway. Geo P. was overseer on highway. 

Tuesday: I this forenoon took the one horse wagon and went to the west part of Lebanon to Smith’s mill and paid two dollars and 25 cents for six hundred pounds of plaster. On the way home through Lebanon I called to Squ Wheeler’s the gate tender and paid him ten cents which pays up my commute to September a reckoning in the apple trees Geo P. let said Wheeler have this spring towards commute, which was 40 cents. I called to F. Everett’s store and paid six cents for one pound roll brimstone to burn to keep the crows from the corn field. This afternoon I and my hired boy Edwin planted over potatoes where the crows had pulled up the corn and my two sons worked on the highway with the team and Edwin this forenoon worked on the highway.

Wednesday: This forenoon I and Edwin plastered corn. Today Geo P. worked on the highway with the team. The most part of the work on the highway this year has been building up the road along against my orchard. Today John F. and Charlotte E went to Troy with one horse wagon and carried boosums and collars to Bennett’s and Vanvalkenburgh for ourselves and others. Tonight at sunset Mr. Gustus Rollo had a son die, a little boy

Orienteering AT GLSP

The Empire Orienteering Club will hold its National Orienteering Day event at Grafton Lakes State Park with registration at the Amphitheater at the Park (by Main parking lot) starting at 11 am on Sunday, September 21. Courses range from 1.6 km to 7.5 km. Come test your orienteering skills with map and compass. Michael A. Killeen

Stephentown – Michael A. Killeen, 66, of Luella Road, Latham, NY, died on Tuesday,  September 16, 2008, at his residence in the loving arms of his wife. He was born in the Bronx, NY, on August 9, 1942, and was the son of the late John and Hazel Doherty Killeen.  He was educated in the Bronx and was a graduate of Chatham High School.  He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War having been honorably discharged on December 31, 1966. Michael retired from the Verizon Corp., as a splicer in Albany, having worked for the phone company for over 35 years.  He had been a CWA representative for a number of years.  He was a member of American Legion Mohawk Post #1450 in Halfmoon, NY.  He enjoyed traveling and attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.  Michael was an avid Yankee and Giants fan.  Following retirement, he had worked part time for the Jackson Hewitt Co. in Albany, NY.

He is the beloved husband of Claire Conover Killeen whom he married on March 19, 1988, devoted father of Michael A. and wife Lori Killeen of Stephentown, NY, and Mark A. and wife Kim Killeen of Poestenkill, NY, step-father of Korin and husband Charles Homestead of Anchorage, AK, Kleanthe Caryofilles of Stephentown, Demetra and husband James Greenlaw of Woodford, VT, and Damon and wife Audrey Caryofilles of Granville, NY. He is also survived by five grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral is Friday morning, September 19, at 11 am from St. Ambrose Church in Latham where the Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 pm Thursday in the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 Rt. 9 in Clifton Park, NY.

Interment with full military honors will be in the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga  National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY.
