The PVMCC will host a Harvest Craft & Halloween Bazaar in the Veterans Memorial Hall in Petersburgh on October 25, from 5 to 8 pm.
Please come and celebrate. Children will decorate cookies, pumpkins, etc. Snacks will be provided. At dark we will do a Jack-o’-lantern lighting. Costumes are optional.
Bring a baked item for judging (optional). The winner will receive a prize.
It was open meeting night at Hoosick Grange on October 8. Marion Cipperly was in charge of the program. She introduced Mr. Dean Foster, Headmaster of The Hoosac School. He said he always wanted to learn more about the Grange. We told him some things, and then he told us about Hoosac School. He said the very wealthy and famous Tibbits family started the first school in Lansingburgh. The school was founded in 1889 with 125 students. It survived the depression when other schools didn’t. He told us it is a Prep School that prepares students for college, and is an intellectual school. They have students from 14 different countries. The class size is 10 students per instructor. They teach 38 different languages. They have a new language lab. They have a very good athletic program of ice skating, soccer and basketball. They receive no Federal money. They have a new fitness center, and they give one million dollars in financial aid a year. They have both boys and girls, 12 years old and up.
This year the school will be celebrating the 120 Yule Log and Boar’s Head. They also will celebrate the 125 Founders’ Day on November 1. He said all are welcome to come and celebrate with them.
The school is working at being more active in the community. They clean the Hill Road every year and are involved with HAYC3. Dean loves the area and the school. He came to the school in 1994, and his wife is from Petersburgh. They have three children. He invited the Grange to come and visit the school. The Grange members thanked Dean for a very informative program. They had some delicious refreshments after the program, provided by Marion Cipperly.
The Lecturer announced that she remembered three sick Grangers and thanked Martha Babbitt for printing the program and planning books.
Berta Burr is in charge of the program on October 22. Her topic is walnut trees. Refreshment committee is Allen and Edna Cornell. All are welcome to come for the program.
The Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, October 25, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located at 35 Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5:30 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.
No advance registration is required. A donation of $35 per player will be accepted and give the player 6,000 in chip value. Players can make an additional $10 donation at the door for 2,000 extra in chip value. This tournament will pay one place for every ten players with a minimum of four places and a maximum of nine places.
A free buffet will be served at the first break, and refreshments will be available.

The Pioneer Fish and Game Club, Inc. held its 68th Election of Officers and Picnic on Sunday, September 25. Officers elected were President Edward Sukuskas, Vice President Rodd Post, Secretary Gary Sargood and Treasurer Richard Ogden. After a brief meeting a picnic was enjoyed by approximately 60 members and guests.
The Pioneer Fish & Game Club is located a the end of Fish & Game Road on Potter Hill. The Club has a nature trail that is sometimes maintained by Boy Scouts. This summer they hosted the Town of Hoosick Day Camp for a day. They frequently host youth groups, and the Boy Scouts use the place in the winter. “The Club House has every animal from this part of the Country in it,” said President Ed Sukuskas.
The Club is currently applying for a grant to create a five and a half acre small game habitat for New England cottontails, turkeys and other small game.
The Club is limited to 100 senior members, plus several junior members.
The 7th Annual Oktoberfest to benefit land conservation in Rensselaer County will take place on Saturday, October 18, from 1 to 9 pm. Oktoberfest will be held at Revolution Hall, 417-425 River Street, Troy. The $10 admission will benefit the Rensselaer Land Trust. Beer and food will be sold separately and paid directly to Brown’s Brewing Company. You must be 21 years of age or older to attend.
The Hoosick Area Church Association is pleased to announce that Edward J. Gorman, Esquire will be the keynote speaker at the HACA Volunteer and Sponsor Appreciation Brunch to be held on October 25 from 10 am to noon at the First United Presbyterian Church.

Grafton – Stanton Burdick, 86, died peacefully Wednesday, October 8, 2014, at his home on the hill in Grafton with his family at his side. Born in Grafton, NY, on May 3, 1928, he was the son of the late Edward and Edna Vars Burdick.
New Lebanon – Caroline Clovis Ketchum, 87, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2014, at the Pine Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Philmont, NY. She was the loving wife of the late Melvin “Bud” Ketchum, who died on July 8, 2012. They were married on July 15, 1945.
Born in Stephentown, NY, Caroline was the daughter of the late Caspar and Hazel (Hassen) Rathbun. She was raised and educated in Stephentown and New Lebanon, NY, where she resided for much of her life.
Caroline served as a domestic housekeeper for 40 years to several families in Lebanon, NY, and Canaan, NY. She loved her family and her home and enjoyed gardening, yard work, sewing and her pets.
She was the much loved mother of Nancy and husband William Petersoli and the late David Melvin Ketchum and the dear aunt of Lori Stroehlin.
A private graveside service was held in the Hancock Cemetery, Hancock, MA, on Monday, October 13, at 4 pm.
Arrangements were by the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home, Stephentown.
North Hoosick – John W. Kasavicha, 72, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2014. He had resided on Cobble Hill Road in North Hoosick, NY, with his wife Erma (Kelly) Kasavicha.
Born on November 17, 1942, John was the son of the late Francis and Wilma (Ross) Kasavicha. He graduated from the Hoosick Falls High School. John served in the United States Navy from 1984 until retiring in1991. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, baseball and teaching his grandson to drive a tractor.
Survivors, other than his wife Erma, include his son, John W. Kasavicha of Brownsville, TX, his daughter, Kristine Symonds of Hoosick Falls, NY, his brother, Frank Kasavicha of Poestenkill, NY, and his grandson, Justin William Symonds.
The funeral service was Thursday, October 16, at 11 am from the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls. Burial will be at the Gerald B.H. Solomon/Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY. Relatives and friends called at the funeral home on Thursday from 10 am until the start of the service.
