Rev. Donna Elia’s 25th Anniversary

On Sunday September 14, First United Church, Presbyterian in Hoosick Falls will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the ordination of our pastor, Rev. Donna Elia.

Donna Elia grew up in Philadelphia, PA, and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education from LaSalle University. After teaching in the School District of Philadelphia for several years, she felt a call to ordained ministry and went to Princeton Theological Seminary, receiving her Master of Divinity degree in 1989. After graduation, she was called to be pastor of Tribes Hill Presbyterian Church, where she served until 1995. She then served as associate pastor and then as acting head of staff of First Presbyterian Church in Albany. In October 2000, Rev. Elia accepted the position of executive director of Troy Area United Ministries, an ecumenical organization committed to seeking the social and spiritual well being of people in Rensselaer County. Since January 2007 she has been the stated supply pastor of First United Church in Hoosick Falls.

During the 10:30 service, special music will be provided by Ms. Peggy Shalit on violin and the First United Choir will present the anthem “I Give My Life.” A reception will follow at 11:30 in the Church hall.

First United Church, Presbyterian is located on upper Main Street next to the medical office building (formerly CHP). The Church is accessible by those with disabilities. For more information, contact Elder Joyce Brewer at 686-4942 or Elder John Button at 686-7678.

Darlene M. Brundige

Hoosick Falls – Darlene M. Brundige, 54, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Friday, September 5, 2014, at the Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation in Hoosick Falls, NY. She had resided there for the past several years. She was the daughter of Carol Betit of Hoosick Falls and the late Normand Betit Sr.

Darlene was born on March 18, 1960, in Cambridge, NY. She graduated from Hoosick Falls Central School and was formerly employed at the Eddy in Troy, NY, as a health aid. Darlene loved spending time with her family and playing bingo.

Survivors, other than her mother Carol, include her children, Marchell Leva and Gary and wife Nicole Brundige, her siblings, Shannon and husband James Chaplin, Penny and husband Bruce Rawling, Scott and wife Charlene Betit, Shawn Betit, Andrea and husband Scott Brophy and Normand Betit Jr. and wife Christina, her grandchildren, Elizabeth, Janessa and Alyssa Leva, Anessa, Krista, Anthony and Breyden Brundige. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the care of the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls, New York, 12090. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation through the funeral home.

The Life Of George Holcomb – George Votes The Jackson Ticket

Monday: I cut up and drew in corn and put shoes on my sled.

Tuesday: Today Calvin Carpenter bought a fat cow of me and paid me 20 dollars.

Saturday: I wagoned up manure and towards night I went with the single wagon to cousin Samuel Holcomb’s and carried brother Wm. We eight of us Universalists present choose a president and clerk of the meeting and combined us into a Society of the Universalist articles of Faith. We then choose a clerk, Ezekiel Knap, and a treasurer, Juno Chittendon, and three trustees – first Samuel Holcomb, second myself, and Mr. Rufus Rose. We contributed twelve cts apiece to buy a book to keep our records and then we voted an adjournment.

Sunday, Nov. 4: This afternoon I went to Lebanon at the Baptist meeting house, the Rev. A.C. Newel preached. Tonight some rainy.

Wednesday: Today I went to Election and supported the Jackson ticket. I carried brother Samuel and Old Mr. Simpson with me. This afternoon I took the single wagon and my wife went with me and we carried Fanna Roberts home. She has worked to Elder Jones for three weeks. I paid her up all I am in debt for her work with me this season, which is twenty dollars, and I gave her a few pounds cheese and other small notions.

Monday: I called down to Fred Evert’s store to see if he wanted to buy beef or pork, but not any. This evening I called over to Calvin Carpenters to see if he would drive my beef to Troy. He told me to come with them in the morning and if we could not bargain he would drive my beef at 75 cts per head. I agreed to it.

Tuesday: This morning I drove my cows over to said Carpenter but we could not bargain and I sent the four beef cows by him to market at 75 cts per head. Today I wagoned my cheese to Wm Lapum and delivered it to Justice Goodrich dwelling house. There said Lapum met me and weighed off my cheeses 3757 pounds at six cts per pound. It come to 225 dollars and 42 cts, and I discounted five dollar and said Lapum paid me the cash in hand.

Motocross Track Redux?

“It’s been all fun.” That’s Lebanon Valley Speedway owner Howard Commander talking to a Times Union reporter on the occasion of his receiving a DIRTcar Hall of Fame award last month for his 50 years of dedication to the sport of racing.

But just before the “all fun” wrap-up, Commander made a comment that has gotten some folks pretty riled up. He said he had two things remaining on his bucket list, fixing the flooding on his land, “And on Sunday afternoon I want to see the drag track, motocross track and go-kart track running and being packed full of people.” [Read more…] about Motocross Track Redux?

$673,800 Bid Accepted For Hoosick Town Pool Repairs

At a special Town of Hoosick Board meeting on Thursday, August 28, the Board approved the recommendation from Laberge Group to accept the low bid from William L. Watson Co., Inc. of Eden, NY, for rehabilitation of the Weir Reynolds Community Pool at a cost of $673,800. Bids were also received from DeBrino Caulking Associated, Inc. of Castleton, NY, for $695,722 and from Patterson-Stevens, Inc. of Tonawanda, NY, for $746,360.

According to the internet Barn Quilt History, “The concept of barn quilts began with Donna Sue Groves and her wish to honor her mother, Maxine, and her Appalachian heritage by having a painted quilt hung on her barn in Adams County, Ohio. As is often the case, good ideas fall by the wayside when work and other obligations intervene. Liberty Flies! Hoosick Civil War Soldiers Honored

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the first week in August, Hoosick Falls history was made when 13 Town of Hoosick men who were killed in action in the Civil War were honored as Voice of a Vet’s Tribute Flag (Liberty) flew over the sites where these men are buried.
