Hoosick Town Board Action – 2014 Budget Approved

November 22, 2013 By eastwickpress

by Bea Peterson

At the meeting on Thursday, November 14, the Town of Hoosick Board passed the 2014 budget with little fanfare. There were no changes made to the budget from the preliminary to final stage. Overall there was a 1.51 percent decrease from the budget of the previous year. Though there was no fuss at the Board meeting, there was some fuss at the Public Hearing on November 7. Hamlet Or Not To Hamlet

November 22, 2013 By eastwickpress

by Thaddeus Flint

On a cold autumn night last week, some of the good citizens of New Lebanon decided it was worth heading down to the elementary school to see what they could do about fixing up their town.

“So many memories are here,” said Jagat Pandey, as he sat in the school’s library his own children learned to read in. Pandey was waiting with about fifty of his fellow townspeople to see what Behan Planning, a Saratoga firm hired by New Lebanon last spring for $20,000, had to say about keeping their little town a genuine little town, but maybe one with food and more jobs.

Panthers Extinguish Blue Devils’ Fire, 27 – 6

November 22, 2013 By eastwickpress

by Steve Bradley

Twenty-three yards. Remember that number.

The first half wasn’t a Hoosick Falls Panthers highlight reel. It wasn’t the well oiled Panther machine we’ve come to expect. Passes were dropped, blocks were missed, runners escaped from normally sure tacklers. There were plenty of penalty flags and missed interception opportunities. The Panthers were, gasp, down 6 – 3 in the second quarter. With a season 318 – 0 edge in points in the first three quarters up to this game, this was a shock. It was the first time all year they played from behind. [Read more…] about Panthers Extinguish Blue Devils’ Fire, 27 – 6

Correction To The November 15 Grafton Budget Story

November 22, 2013 By eastwickpress

by Alex Brooks

In last week’s story on the Grafton Budget, the Code Enforcement Officer was reported to be getting a raise of $1,500 from his 2013 salary to his 2014 salary. Although it is true that his salary will be $1,500 higher, there is more to the story. Several years ago in a tight budget year, Code Enforcement Officer Tom Withcuskey was asked to accept $1,500 less salary on a temporary basis to help the Town get through a lean year without a big tax increase. He agreed, and his salary was reduced for a few years. The increase from 2013 to 2014 could therefore more accurately be termed a restoration of his previous salary than a “raise.”

Stephentown Historical Society Topic: Benedict Arnold

November 22, 2013 By eastwickpress

The Stephentown Historical Society will hold its holiday potluck dinner on Monday, December 2, at 6:30 pm at the Stephentown Heritage Center, Garfield Road (County Route 26), Stephentown. Officers and Board members will be elected at the brief business meeting.

Military historian Larry Arnold will give an illustrated talk, “Arnold on Arnold: The Day Benedict Arnold Saved the American Revolution.”

Arnold has been studying military history for fifty years. He followed a thirty year career at UPS with a ten year gig as Park Ranger at the Saratoga Battlefield National Historic Park. His talk will explain how Benedict Arnold became a national hero because of one day at Saratoga that changed the course of the American Revolution. When the officer turned traitor, his fall from grace was much more dramatic because he was so famous.

For the dinner, bring a dish large enough to share – main course, salad or dessert. Beverages and table service are provided. Instead of a gift exchange, a monetary collection will be taken to support the Stephentown Food Pantry. All meetings are free and open to the public. The building is handicapped-accessible. For information, phone 518-733-0010.

Black Friday At The Petersburgh Library

November 22, 2013 By eastwickpress

Join us for the longest Black Friday special in Petersburgh history. On November 23 through December 7 the Petersburgh Library will be giving away hundreds of books, audios cassettes and videos. Since the book sale in May 2013 the Library has received numerous donations of used books, etc. We now need to clean our vestibule, so for two weeks we are offering everything in the vestibule free to the public. Take advantage of this opportunity to find a good book to read, or, if you have an older vehicle, pick up some books on audiocassette to listen to as you travel.

Cash Donations Needed

The end of the year is approaching, and the Library is in need of funds to purchase new books in 2014. The Town of Petersburgh has found it necessary to cut the contractual portion of the Library budget by $1,450. Since this portion of the budget includes items which cannot be reduced, such as telephone bills, internet charges, post office box rental and charges related to our participation in the Upper Hudson Library System, etc., this means the book budget is being reduced by $1,450. To make up this deficit the Library is requesting cash donations to buy new books in 2014. The Library is a non-profit organization and you may receive a tax deductible receipt for your donation. You may want to consider making a donation in memory of or in honor of a friend or loved on this holiday season. All donations of any size will be greatly appreciated by all the Library users in the coming year.

Holiday Cookies

On Saturday, December 7, from 10 am to 12 pm children of all ages are invited to drop by the Library to decorate holiday cookies to take home. Cookies and decorating supplies will be provided

Story Hour

Pre-school Story Hour continues on Tuesdays at 11 am. On November 26 there will be a special Thanksgiving story hour.

Learn To Crochet

Tuesday, November 26, at 2 pm we will hold our final Tuesday Learn to Crochet session. If you are interested in future classes please contact the Library.

Knitting
