Higher CHIPs Funding For Local Highways

This year Town and County Highway Superintendents have successfully pressured the State government to increase funding for local highway aid known as CHIPS (Consolidated Highway Improvement Program).
The CHIPS money, which provides State funding to municipalities for construction and repair of local highways and bridges, has been level-funded at $363 million statewide for the last five years.

Highway Superintendents – Heroes Or Goats?

This is the time of year when people complain about their Town Highway Superintendent. When we get a blizzard in the winter and the highway crews plow us out, they are heroes. When a summer mega-rainstorm washes out a road and the highway crew rebuilds it, they are heroes. But when the snow melts and the spring wind starts blowing up dust from sand left on paved roads, and the spring thaw cycles leave dirt roads soft and muddy, highway superintendents come in for criticism.

On Saturday, March 23, the Town of Hoosick Lions Club celebrated its 53rd Annual Penny Hunt in Wood Park. Before the event a portion of the Park had to be cleared of snow.

In 1824, in New Lebanon, Elam Tilden established Tilden and Company, which became the first pharmaceutical company in the United States. Tilden grew the herbs and then used them to develop and manufacture herbal medicines which were sold locally and nationwide. The company became an important part of the economic, social and environmental life of the community. It closed in 1963 after being absorbed into a series of larger companies.

Each month, the Shaking Up Sundays: Reading Group sponsored by the Shaker Museum | Mount Lebanon takes an in depth look to see what made the Shakers so ahead of their time. A lively conversation on the Shakers as pacifists, based on a variety of unusual readings, will be held at the Darrow School Library on Sunday, April 14, at 2 pm. On May 12 the topic will be celibacy.
