Hoosick Falls – On November 29, 2012, Rolf Max Sternberg passed away peacefully in his home with his daughters, his sister and sister-in-law by his side. He was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in October 2011. Always hopeful that he would get better, he fought until his very last day.

Hoosick Falls – Richard Martelle, 87, passed away on Saturday, December 8, 2012, at his residence on First Street in Hoosick Falls, NY. He had resided there with his wife Felicia.
Born on July 25, 1927, in Hoosick Falls, Richard was the son of the late Joseph and Caroline (Biondi) Martelle. Richard was employed at Cushman Furniture and the Specialty in Hoosick Falls. He was a member of the Sons of Italy and a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church. Richard enjoyed gardening, playing bocce, playing cards and making wine.

Three Ugandan Water Tanks In Place
From January 1 through May 31, the Hoosick Falls Community Alliance Church endeavored to raise $3,500 to purchase one rainwater collection tank to provide water for a village in Uganda. Through the efforts of HFCAC, Women of Hope and the generosity of those in Hoosick Falls et al, over $10,500 came in – enough to provide a safe water source for three Ugandan villages.

History Of The Old Dutch Church In Berlin

Old-timers remember the beautiful, old, white “Dutch Church” with its simple and clean lines that stood on Berlin Mountain at the top of Bly Hollow Road at the intersection of Miller Road and Taborton Road in Berlin. Speaking at the Stephentown Historical Society on Monday, Berlin Town Historian Sharon Klein pointed out that it was really not a Dutch church but a “Deutsch” or German church, formally named Zion’s Evangelical Reformed Church of West Berlin. It was the center of a German community that formed in that area beginning with the arrival in Berlin in 1834 of two families, the Gutermuths and the Jordans.

Both Dollar Stores To Open Soon In Hoosick

Workers at the Dollar General and Family Dollar stores now under construction on Route 22 in Hoosick had little to say about when the stores will be opened. Bruce, at the Dollar General site, said they anticipate turning the building over to the owners on January 1, 2013. Crystal W. Ghassemi, Public Relations Manager for Dollar General Corporation in Goodlettsville, TN, emailed that the store is slated to open after the first of the year, noting that they don’t have a specific Grand Opening date since construction progress often affects those plans.

Weir Fund Gives $11,154 To The Hoosick Area Community

On Saturday, December 1, Norma Brenenstuhl distributed checks to various community organizations on behalf of the Weir Foundation.
According to a write-up from the Louis Miller Museum, Harry Weir was born in Cambridge, NY, in 1886. For most of his life he lived in North Hoosick. Weir started out at Noble and Wood Machine Company as a foundry foreman. He became Secretary of the company in 1918 and later became Treasurer, then President, then General Manager. After his retirement in 1960 he was named Chairman of the Board.
