Train Derailed In Hoosick

The silence through the Hoosick and Hoosick Falls area late Tuesday afternoon, Tuesday night and Wednesday morning into afternoon was deafening. Not a train rumble or whistle was heard. It was scarier than Halloween. The cause of the silence was a 14 car derailment not far from the Hoosick Falls Wastewater Treatment Plant at about four o’clock Tuesday. Stephentown Town Supervisor Larry Eckhardt reported on Tuesday that according to a NYSEG official Stephentown was near the top of the list in Rensselaer County for power outages. Fatal Car Accident In Berlin

A fatal accident occurred in the Town of Berlin early Tuesday morning as the effects of Hurricane Sandy were beginning to subside here. Two Candidates For Hoosick Highway Superintendent

The only two local candidates running in the election next Tuesday are Bill Shiland III and Louis Schmigel. They are vying for the remaining one year of the term of Town of Hoosick Highway Superintendent. The vacancy came about with the unexpected retirement of former Highway Superintendent Bill Shiland, Jr. in August. Shiland held the job for 25 years. Petersburgh Budget Heading Towards A 5% Tax Levy Increase

Although the Petersburgh budget for 2013 has not been finalized, the Board has held two budget workshops and appears to be heading toward a budget that would increase the tax levy by about 5%.  The budget as it stood at the end of the second budget workshop was slightly below a 5% increase. A Hoosick Falls Halloween

DEC Lists Notice Of Stephentown ZBA Acceptance Of Motocross Environmental Statement

The State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced on its Environmental Notice Bulletin website that the Stephentown Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA), as lead agency, has accepted a Draft Environmental Impact Statement on the Stephentown Motocross Track proposed for a site off of Webster Hill Road. This action occurred at the ZBA meeting on October 4.

Local Scout Participates In The Regional Emergency Medical Organization Drill

On Saturday, October 27, at the Albany County International Airport Michael Zlotnick from Troop 222 volunteered as a victim of an airplane crash. He was one of about 98 other victim volunteers made up of other Scouts, college and high school students and community members. The Regional Emergency Medical Organization Drill (REMO) is one that is required every three years by the FAA and is a good opportunity to evaluate the area’s response to a MCI (Mass Casualty Incident).

NLCSD Wins State Award

The New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) has chosen the New Lebanon Central School District as one of three winners in its inaugural Be the Change for Kids Innovation Awards.
Out of 38 schools from 36 districts, New Lebanon, along with the Berne-Knox-Westerlo Central School District and the Rondout Valley Central School District, was chosen by the NYSSBA and the University at Albany’s College of NanoScale Science & Engineering to receive $5,000 toward the continuation of its program. The programs were judged by scientists from NanoCollege.
