Square Dance At The PVMCC

There will be a square dance at the Petersburgh Veterans Memorial Community Center on Saturday, October 13, from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. Dances will be called by Ken Hallenbeck with lively music provided by Martha von Schilgen, Floyd Smith and Hallenbeck. Singles and beginners are welcome. All dances will be taught. Admission is $8 for adults and is free for kids under 18. Light refreshments will be available. For more information, call Jeanne at 518-658-3953.

Chris Bohjalian’s 15th novel, The Sandcastle Girls, gives a glimpse of his own family history. His Armenian grandparents were survivors of the Armenian genocide by Turkey. The story unfolds when the granddaughter of an Armenian-Bostonian investigates the genocide and discovers the guilty secret her grandmother took to her grave.

Grafton Community Library October Events

• Saturday, October 13 or 20, 9 am to 12:30 pm – Basket Weaving Workshop with Linda Dayton at the Everett Wagar Senior Center. Class size is limited. Pre-registration and a $5 materials fee is required, payable at registration.  Choose one class date. The minimum age to attend is 10 and the youngster must be accompanied by an adult.
• Tuesday, October 16, at 4 pm – Sing-a-long with Mary Pierson. Join us for a sing-a-long for all ages!

Berkshire Musician Jason Webster To Perform At New Lebanon Library

Berkshire singer/songwriter and guitarist Jason Webster will be performing at the New Lebanon Library on Friday, October 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  He will perform a combination of original pieces and folk/rock covers. While this event is free and open to the public, donations for the performer are appreciated.

Ryan Sams Re-enlists In New York Army National Guard

Specialist Ryan Sams from Berlin has reenlisted to continue service with the Headquarters and Support Company, 42nd Infantry Division.
Major General Patrick A. Murphy, the Adjutant General, announced the recent reenlistment of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their continuing commitment to serve community, state and nation as part of the Army National Guard.

Johnsonville Rescue Squad Breakfast

The Johnsonville Rescue Squad located at 4 River Road is holding its monthly breakfast  on Sunday, October 7, from 7:30 to 11:30 am. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children. The menu consists of eggs, French toast, pancakes, sausage, omelets, hash browns,  juice, fruit and coffee.  For more information, call 753-6011.

The Canaan Protective Fire Company Breakfast

The Canaan Protective Fire Company will be holding its final Belly Busting Breakfast Buffet for 2012 on October 14 from 8 to noon. Enjoy eggs, bacon, ham, sausage, Bucky’s bagels, French toast, pancakes, fruit salad, corned beef hash, hash brown potatoes, juice, granola, yogurt and coffee. There is a raffle for a framed Bonnie White print with the winner drawn at noon.
The cost is $8 for adults, $4.50 for children and free for children under 5. The Canaan Fire House is located at 2126 Rt. 295 in Canaan, NY.

Pittstown VFD Chicken Barbecue

The Pittstown Volunteer Fire Department will be holding a chicken barbecue dinner on Saturday, October 13, at the Pittstown Fire House, 134 Parker School Road. The price is $10 per dinner. Take-outs will be served from 3 to 5 pm. At the same time a Fire Prevention Open House with fire safety information and hands-on fire extinguisher demonstrations will occur.

Veterans Texas Hold’em In Stephentown

The Veterans of Stephentown  will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, October 13, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located at 35 Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.
A free buffet will be served at the first break.
No advance registration is required, and a donation of $35 per player will be accepted. Players can make an additional $10 donation at the door for 1,000 extra chips. This tournament will pay one place for every ten players with a minimum of four places and a maximum of 9 places.

Linda J. Gentner

Pittstown – Linda J. Simpson Gentner, 64, of Tamarac Road, Pittstown, NY,  died on Tuesday, October 2, 2012, at the home of her daughter, Jeanne, surrounded by her loving family, under the care of Community Hospice of Rensselaer County.
Born in Troy, NY, on March 15, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Estella McGuire Simpson. She was the wife of the late Dennis “Butch” Gentner, who died on December 1, 1998. They were married in Grafton, NY, on June 16, 1989.
