Hotter Temperatures Contribute To Greater Numbers Of Human West Nile Virus Infections

Laura C. Harrington, an expert on mosquito-borne diseases and an Associate Professor of Entomology at Cornell University, discussed the factors behind increased reports of West Nile Virus.
She said, “As of August 23, a total of 11 confirmed human cases of West Nile Virus have been reported in New York State, including one death in Onondaga County. To date, more than 700 mosquito pools have tested positive for the virus across the State.

Pumpkinpalooza 4 is adding “No Place Like Gnome” to Pumpkinpalooza 4. No Place Like Gnome is a two week gnome hunt in Hoosick. One bright orange gnome will be hidden in a secret location in the Hoosick Community. Each day a riddled clue pertaining to the gnome’s whereabouts will be posted on www.HAYC3.org. The first clue will be posted on September 15. The person who finds the No Place Like Gnome gnome will win $250. Check out Thorpe’s Pharmacy’s window for sneak peak of the Pumpkinpalooza gnome. Brush up on your local history, Hoosick geography and rhetoric.  September 15 is fast approaching!

Three Centuries On The Hudson At The Stephentown Historical Society

Author William Staats will give a talk, “Three Centuries on the Hudson River,” at the Stephentown Historical Society meeting on Monday, September 10, at 7:30 pm.  He tells the story of Hoogebergh, the Dutch fieldstone homestead in Castleton-on-Hudson in which eleven generations of the Staats family have lived. The meeting will be at the Stephentown Heritage Center on Garfield Road, Stephentown.  It is free and open to the public. The building is handicapped accessible. Bly Hollow Brewery, Local Nano-Brewery, Launches With Grand Opening

Bly Hollow Brewery, LLC, will have its Grand Opening on Saturday, September 1, from 2 to 6 pm at 243 Bly Hollow Road, Cherry Plain. The opening of this ‘nano’ size brewery (smaller than micro) will feature live music and tastings of seven different styles of beer, along with an opportunity for all to barter or sell their local goods and garden produce. The public is expected.

The Cottrell Reunion

The annual Cottrell Reunion was held Sunday August 5, at the home of Larry and Patti Baker on Eagle Bridge Road. About 60 descendants of Jonathan Cottrell of Wilson Hill Road attended. After a delicious picnic and several spirited games of volleyball, the day ended with the famous Cottrell bowl of ice cream with all the trimmings.

SML Closed For Labor Day

Stephentown Volunteer Fireman’s Muster

The Annual Stephentown Fireman’s Muster kicks off at 7 pm on Saturday, September 15, with the Water Polo competition. On Sunday, September 16, the Parade begins at 11 am followed by the muster competition.  Come support your local fire departments as they battle each other in head-to-head competitions.  There will be a bouncy-bounce slide for the kids. Parade Float entries from the community are encouraged.
