The results of the November election in Grafton will be bring a lot of changes to the Town. One may be that the Grafton Planning Board will be completely reorganized. At its Organizational meeting on January 4 at 7 pm the Grafton Town Board is likely to appoint a new Planning Board Chair to replace the current Chairman, Tom Withcuskey. How many of the other current members will stay on the Planning Board is anybody’s guess. Planning Board Secretary Jessica Crandall does not know if she will be reappointed. And there is a question as to whether Sal Ferlazzo will remain as the attorney to the Town Board and the Planning Board.

Stephentown Town Board Action – Stephentown Ponders Impact Of Beacon Failure

With Beacon Power in bankruptcy proceedings and required to sell off their frequency regulation plant on Grange Hall Road, Stephentown residents are wondering how the situation will affect the Town. It was a topic of some discussion at Monday’s Town Board meeting. Town Supervisor Larry Eckhardt said he had attended a meeting about the bankruptcy recently with Beacon and NYSERDA officials. He expressed some bewilderment about the pressure being placed on the company by the federal Department of Energy (DOE). No Work On The Dougherty Corner Until Spring

Rumors have been rampant that nothing will ever happen at the former Dougherty’s, the empty hole at the corner of Main and John Streets. “I’ve been waiting four years for something to happen,” said property owner Alex Koks. There was talk that since the weather had remained so mild, construction could begin any day. Petersburgh Town Board Action – Duane Goodermote Jr. Appointed to Town Board

The Petersburgh Town Board accepted with regret the resignation of Amy Manchester. She is giving up her position on the Town Council to take up her duties as the new Town Justice. Amy recently attended a training course for new Town Justices at SUNY. She said it was hard, but she got a 98 on the concluding test and is ready to take up her duties. Amy passed around her father’s certificate of completion from the same course, which he completed just about 50 years ago, in February of 1962, when he started his service as Town Justice in Petersburgh. Amy’s father, Neil Manchester, passed away the afternoon after she got back from her Justice training course.

Emergency Service Concerns Brought To The BCS Board

First responders from the Berlin Rescue Squad and the Berlin Volunteer Fire Company were present at the Berlin Central School District’s December Board meeting Tuesday in response to a lack of response from the Board on whether to allow responders who also work at the schools to respond to emergency calls in the District.
“My secretary wrote this letter to you in July,” said Mark Primeau, Chairman of the Fire Commissioners for Berlin. The letter in question was a demand to allow employees of the School District to attend to emergency calls during school hours and still be paid. “We are not asking for miracles,” he said, “we are just trying to help people.”

HFCS’s Varsity Club Kicks Off Fundraiser With Cumberland Farms

Cumberland Farms customers received a special treat Friday afternoon, December 16, when they entered the store on Church Street. They were greeted with trays of hot sandwiches and pizza to sample. It was the company’s celebration of the reopening of the updated store. Cumberland Farms Regional Director Brian VanBuren said the company has over 800 stores and they expect another 60 to receive the updated chill zones and coffee bars, food services and gas pumps in 2012. VanBuren’s region has 55 stores from Warrensburg to Cairo, NY, and, so far, six of them have been upgraded, including the Hoosick Falls location. Joining VanBuren at the store was Cumberland Farms District Manager Jim Long.

Notice Of BCS Vote Count Correction

It has come to our attention that there was a clerical error in reporting the results of the December 13, 2011, referendum on the capital project for the schools of the Berlin Central School District. This inadvertent error does not affect the outcome of the vote – we are pleased that the project was passed by a substantial margin.
The vote was initially reported as 373 “yes” and 173 “no.” The correct tally was 307 “yes” and 173 “no.” We thank the voters for their support of this important project.

The Stephanie Flint Book Club has donated four books to the Berlin Library in memory of their friend and member, Els Murray, who died this past summer.
