Mechanic Street Property Discussed By Village Planning Board

The Village of Hoosick Falls Planning Board had only one item on its agenda Wednesday evening, March 6. Wayne Willson and Donald Albrecht of Albrecht & Willson Land Surveyors, PLLC, appeared on behalf of Oak Mitsui looking for a boundary line change to the property it now leases, which adjoins the WCW building on Mechanic Street that Rensselaer County is looking to take over for taxes. Oak Mitsui would like to buy the property, but wants to be sure of an adequate entryway and parking.

Steve Zakrzewski

Hoosick Falls – Steve M. Zakrzewski, 53, passed away at his residence on Seward Street in Hoosick Falls, NY. He was the son of the late Joseph and Joan (Skarrup) Zakrzewski.
He was born in Troy, NY, on November 5, 1959, and he attended schools in Cambridge, NY. He was employed at Bennington Paper Board as a laborer. Steve enjoyed the outdoors, shooting pool and being with family. He was an avid Yankee and Giant fan.
Survivors include his daughter, Stephanie Niles of Chesapeake, VA, his sons, Shawn Morrison of Charleston, SC, and Steve M. Zakrzewski Jr. of Hoosick Falls, his four sisters, Donna Candal, Doreen Crandall, Linda Myers and Patty Weld, his four brothers, Joseph, Nelson and Jake Zakrzewski and Harry Criss, and his grandson, Blake Niles.
Funeral services are Friday, March 22, at 2 pm from the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090. Burial will follow the service at Island Hill Cemetery in Buskirk, NY. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 12 to 2 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Steve’s family through the funeral home.

Barton M. Breithaupt

Hoosick – Barton M. Breithaupt, 82, died March 13, 2013, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT, with his wife Ruth by his side. They had resided in Hoosick, NY, and were married for sixty years. He was a loving, caring and protective husband.
Barton was born August 11, 1930, in Port Washington, NY, and taught elementary school in Stephentown, NY.
Survivors, other than his wife, include four children, Michael, Stephen, Gregory and Leslie, nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, March 16, at 2 pm from the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090. There were no calling hours. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad through the funeral home.

New Lebanon Town Board Action – Eminent Domain Issue Packs The Town Hall

If you want to fill a Town Hall, probably the easiest way to do it is to whisper the words “eminent domain” in a small town in America. There is nothing like the threat of the government coming for private property to get people off their sofas like the house itself is on fire. New Lebanon was no exception to this peculiarity Tuesday night, and the Town Hall was standing-room-in-the-hallways only at a public hearing for the New Lebanon Sidewalks Project.

Village Board Gives Center For Nursing And Rehab A Reprieve

At the February meeting of the Hoosick Falls Village Board, members of the Board of The Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation at Hoosick Falls (formerly the Health Center) requested forgiveness of the rest of the loan owed to the Village. In 1995 the Village received a $400,000 block grant which they then loaned to the Center. The Center has been paying back the loan since then, but not the interest. The Village Board chose to table the Center’s request until March for further discussion. At Tuesday’s meeting the Village Board unanimously agreed to defer the loan payment for one year, to waive all interest payments on the loan and to refinance the rest of the loan, $135,301.82, for payment over 10 years.

Pray For Us – We Drive Route 7

As reported in these pages three weeks ago the Rensselaer County Legislature had decided to renew the request for a safety review of State Route 7 in Hoosick. A resolution to this effect was voted on at the March legislative meeting on Tuesday. The resolution was introduced by Vice Chairman of the Legislature Stan Brownell and Legislator Lester Goodermote; both men represent District Five, which includes the towns of Stephentown, Berlin, Petersburgh, Grafton, Hoosick and the Village of Hoosick Falls.

Hoosick Town Board Action – March 2013

Summer Camp
At its regular meeting on Monday,March 10, the Board approved a motion extending the Town of Hoosick Summer Day Camp from six to seven weeks and extending the hours from 8 am to 4:30 pm. Children ages five to 12 years old are eligible to attend on a first come-first served basis. Camp is limited to 60 children per week. This year they are going to try a “future counselors in training” program. Camp will begin June 24 and run through August 9. Registration is expected to begin in the next few weeks.
