Wesley Brownell And Family Celebrate His 90th Birthday

The Hoosick Falls Baptist Church hall was filled with family and friends of Wesley Brownell on Saturday, February 21. Colorful balloons and signs festooned the hall. Everyone was on hand to help Wes celebrate his 90th birthday. His son, Rensselaer County Legislator Stan Brownell, presented him with a congratulatory certificate from the County Legislature.

Jo Ann Hawks
Eagle Bridge – Jo Ann Hawks, 71, passed away surrounded by her family on Wednesday, February 27, 2013, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT. She was the wife of C. Donald Hawks; they resided on Route 22 in Eagle Bridge, NY.
Born on July 14, 1941, in Cambridge, NY, Jo Ann was the daughter of the late Herman and Jean (Bentley) Marsh. Jo Ann graduated from Hoosick Falls Central School. She worked at Fairbanks Express in Hoosick Falls, NY, for thirty-seven years and later with RGI Insurance also in Hoosick Falls. Jo Ann was an avid Hummel collector and NASCAR fan. She enjoyed vacationing with her husband in Hampton Beach, NH, and at Lake Lauderdale, NY.
Survivors, other than her husband Donald, include her sisters, Cherry Millington of Hewitt, TX, Patricia Grennan and husband Bill of Hoosick Falls, Kay Wright and husband Howie of Cambridge and Lori Gardner and husband Jeff of Mesa, AZ, her brother, Donald Marsh and wife Karen of Castleton, NY, and her brother-in-law, Jack Hawks and wife Belva of Georgia. Jo Ann is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Center at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center through the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street, Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090, which is handling the arrangements.
Weierbach Crowned State Champ; First Title In HF Wrestling History

Saturday mornings at the New York State Wrestling Championships is one of the most intense times of the high school wrestling season in the Empire State. One hundred twenty of the states best wrestlers in each division face off for their chance to go into the final round and a chance at one of the coveted fifteen State championships in each division. By this point the cream of the crop has risen to the top, and every match ended with celebrations of joy and tears of agony.

Alleged Burglars Of Farrara’s Arrested

On February 13 the Hoosick Falls Police arrested Brett Stone, age 20, of 9 Madison Street, Hoosick Falls and charged him with the burglary of Farrara’s Pub and Grill on Classic Street. Words Of Praise For The Departed Grafton Supervisor

Grafton Supervisor Ray Darling passed away on Friday, February 22. He was 68. Words of praise for Darling are being heard throughout the Town, focusing on the way he was able to combine the strength and competitiveness that made him a world champion arm wrestler with the kind and gentle demeanor that made him such a popular guy.

Contracts Awarded For BES Phase 1 Project

Even as the Berlin School Board failed, once again, to get a needed two-thirds super-majority vote that would allow the District to largely renovate the Berlin Elementary School, Phase 1 of a scaled down project is proceeding apace. Two contracts, one for window replacement and one for lead and asbestos abatement, were awarded at Tuesday’s monthly meeting with only Board Members John Nash and Alan Webster Jr. voting against the project. Nash and Webster Jr. also voted against the Bond Authorization that would have financed the full plan. Board Member Bev Stewart was absent.

The Stephentown Library Legislative District Would Have Taxing Authority

The Stephentown Memorial Library held a public hearing on Thursday, February 21, regarding its proposal to convert the Library to a Special Legislative District (SLD) public library with taxing authority. Attendance was surprisingly low. In a town with about 3,000 inhabitants, only about 30 people attended. There were no comments in opposition to the proposal or expressions of any particular concern. Library Board President Sue Cass said that another public hearing would be held in early March, at the Town Hall instead of at the Library. This hearing has since been scheduled for Wednesday, March 13 at 7 pm at the Town Hall. The vote on this proposal is scheduled for March 19.

The Berlin High School Art Department is proud to present a sample of student artwork to the Berlin Community. The Second Annual Student Art Show at the Berlin Free Town Library will run from March 6 to the 28th. The media featured will be drawing, painting, sculpture, photography and graphic arts.
