After a month long burglary investigation, Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Investigators arrested Keith E. Gates, 25, of Church Street, Hoosick Falls. Gates is charged with Burglary Second Degree and Grand Larceny Fourth Degree, both are felonies. The arrest is in connection with a residential burglary that occurred on Tory Hill Road in Pittstown in April. Reportedly, jewelry valued at $1,800 was taken. It has not been recovered to date.

Grafton’s Dickinson Hill Fire Tower Is Being Restored

The Dickinson Hill Fire Tower in Grafton is being restored by the Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park, and they are doing a wonderful job. The Fire Tower is almost 100 years old. So far the stair boards, cab flooring, stair raisers, window bars and the X braces on the tower have been replaced by Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park and Dave Vana LLC Fire Tower Restoration. BCS Bond Vote The Same As It Ever Was

At about halfway into last Wednesday’s Berlin School District Board meeting, Board member Frank Zwack took his glasses off and buried his head into his arms at the table where his fellow Board members were once again arguing over the Bond authorization for the Capital Project. The meeting went on. Nobody seemed to find his actions all that unusual. For the sixth time the Board had failed to obtain the required super-majority fifth vote to get the $6.8 million Capital Project underway at the elementary school. Stephentown resident Burt Swersey was recognized for outstanding service to students at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s 206th Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 26. Swersey, a longtime senior Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Nuclear Engineering, was selected as the 38th recipient of the prestigious David M. Boy Scout Troop 222 Visits Battleship

The boys from Boy Scout Troop 222 went on an adventure to Battleship Cove in Fall River, MA, aboard the battleship USS Massachusetts, BB59, “The big Mamie,” on Saturday, May 19, The Troop has been planning this trip for two years. The trip included staying overnight aboard the USS Massachusetts in the same bunks as the original WW II sailors and crew. The boys toured the ship and museum and a destroyer and a submarine that were moored alongside the battleship.

Berlin Middle/High School Is County Envirothon Champ

The Berlin High School Envirothon Team was named the Rensselaer County Capital Region winners on May 10. On Thursday, May 10th, the Berlin High School and Middle School Envirothon teams traveled to Schoharie Valley to the Blenheim Gilboa Center to compete in their first Envirothon competition – the 2012 Capital Region Envirothon. They finished in first place, outcompeting reigning champions Tech Valley High School. The students performed remarkably well given they only had several weeks to prepare. HFCS Baseball Plays Way Into Championship Game At Bruno Stadium

The Panther baseball team, ranked 6th in sectional seeding, traveled to Amsterdam last Saturday to take on the number 2 seed Rensselaer Rams at Shuttleworth Stadium. Although it took a bit for the team get going, the boys ended the game with a big win, 17 – 1.

Congressman Gibson Visits Berlin

Congressman Chris Gibson on a visit to Berlin on Wednesday was impressed with what’s going on at Green Renewable, the company that occupies the former W.J. Cowee plant.
