The Stephentown Fire Department is warning people of the dangers of unstable ice and open water on streams, rivers, ponds and lakes. The heavy snow pack has insulated the ice and it may be more dangerous than you think.

Hoosick Planning Board Action – Quackenbush Resigns

At the Tuesday, February 22, meeting of the Town of Hoosick Planning Board Jim Dunigan announced that Town Supervisor Keith Cipperly had received a letter of resignation from Planning Board Chairman Everett Quackenbush effective immediately. Quackenbush is resigning for “personal reasons.” Dunigan will once again be Chairman. The Board approved the reappointment of Stanton King as Planning Board Attorney.

West Sand Lake Resident To Be New York Army Guard’s Senior Enlisted Soldier
Command Sgt. Major Frank Wicks Will Advise Adjutant General On All Matters Concerning Soldiers
New York Army National Guard Command Sgt. Major Frank Wicks, a West Sand Lake resident, has been picked as the next New York National Guard State Command Sergeant Major by Major General Patrick Murphy, the Adjutant General of New York.
Wicks, a combat veteran, will replace Command Sgt. Maj. Robert Van Pelt, who retires in May 2011 after more than ten years in the position.

Noble Myers and Roxanna Cummings gave birth to their third of five children on April 12, 1827, in Pownal, Bennington County, Vermont, whom they named Charles Henry Myers. On January 5, 1850, Reverend Elder Tinkham, a Baptist minister, married Charles to Mary Ann Varnum, daughter of Rensselaer Varnum and Eliza A. LeBarron, in the minister’s home in North White Creek, Washington County, New York. This marriage was a surprise to Mary Ann’s parents, as the couple never told them that they were getting married until shortly afterwards on that day. Volunteers Needed For Food Pantry

The Hoosick Area Church Association (HACA) Food Pantry, located at 26 John Street in Hoosick Falls is in need of volunteers. A volunteer is needed the third Wednesday evening of the month for stocking shelves, registering clients and filling grocery bags. Fire Damages Home On Johnson Hill Road In Hoosick

A fire that began in a hall closet in the home of Frederick and Donna Adler on Johnson Hill Road on Tuesday afternoon, February 15, caused considerable smoke, heat and water damage to the entire building. “When we entered the house we couldn’t see more than a foot in front of us; the smoke was that thick,” said North Hoosick Fire Chief Alan Bornt. Berlin Kerfuffle

At the Berlin Town Board meeting on Thursday, February 11, there was a commotion surrounding the basic concept of how to run Town government. When the Board voted 4-1 to reject the only bid on a new tandem axle truck requested by Highway Superintendent Jim Winn, rancorous cries from those in attendance rang out. Basically, the issue is whether one fears for the Town’s financial future and therefore wants to spend little or nothing for services and infrastructure maintenance at this time or whether one feels the Town’s future will be bright and the quality of life maintained if proper and efficient investment in the Town is made now. Those who were vocal in their criticism of the vote Thursday, and there were many who said nothing, believe that the Town should spend money to maintain services.
