SMA Holiday Cabaret – A Reunion Event

Christmas is coming; it’s almost here – mark your calendars for melodies and cheer!

On Saturday, December 7, St. Mary’s Academy is pleased to present, Holiday Cabaret – A Reunion Event.

Local talent David Sutton, Krissy Fauler, Shari Hand, Ric DiDonato and the Richard Cherry Trio will be returning to the SMA stage for what is sure to be a memorable evening. Doors open at 6 pm and our performers will take their spots on stage at 7.

As in the past, we will be offering a silent auction which always provides a wonderful opportunity to get some unique Christmas gifts. Light fare will be served, and there will be a cash bar.

Tickets for the event cost $25 per person and can be purchased at St. Mary’s, Thorpe’s and after each Mass at the Immaculate Conception Church. Reservations will be taken for parties of eight or more only and can be made by calling Pat Hayes at 686-4314.

So call your friends, get your sitter and join us on December 7. What a wonderful way to welcome the Christmas season.

Hoosick Falls Youth Football And Cheerleading Annual Banquet

The Hoosick Falls Youth Football and Cheerleading Annual Banquet will be held  on Sunday, December 8, at 1 pm at St. Mary’s School. Lunch will be provided. Football and cheerleading participants and their parents are admitted free. There is a $5 charge for each additional person.

American Red Cross Blood Drive At HFCAC

On Monday, December 9, from 1 to 6 pm, the Hoosick Falls Community Alliance Church at 484 Hill Road, Hoosick, will provide an opportunity for you to help save a life through our American Red Cross Blood Drive. If you are at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds, are healthy and have not given blood in 56 days you are eligible.

Thomas G. Restino

Hoosick Falls – The Honorable Thomas G. Restino, 86, passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2013, at his residence on Willow Street in Hoosick Falls, NY, surrounded by his loving family. He had resided there with his wife of sixty-two years, Helen (Sluzas) Restino.

Born on September 10, 1927, in Hoosick Falls, Tom was the son of the late Angelo and Anna Rose (Malillo) Restino. He was educated at St. Mary’s Academy in Hoosick Falls. Tom was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict, and he worked at Oak Mitsui in Hoosick Falls as a welder.

Tom’s passion was politics. He began his career as Trustee for the Village of Hoosick Falls and followed as Justice of the Peace for the Town of Hoosick. He served three terms as a Rensselaer County Legislator and finalized his political career as Town of Hoosick Supervisor. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 40, where he had served as Commander, Adjutant and Chaplain. He also was the Past President of the St. Mary’s Academy Alumni.

Survivors, other than his wife Helen, include their children, Michele Restino and Christine Flynn Saulnier of Brimfield, MA , Gregory Restino Sr. and wife Kathy of Hoosick Falls, the Honorable Thomas G. Restino Jr. and wife Margaret of Hoosick Falls and Kathryn Mayer and husband Jeff of Fairfield, CT, his sisters, Margaret Hoffman and Sophie Ravena, both of Hoosick Falls, and Angie Fulginiti and husband Tony of Melrose, MA. Tom is also survived by grandchildren, Toni Monigan, Greg Restino Jr. and  wife Amina, Kathleen Restino, Anna, Jake and Drew Restino and Lucas and Rosey Mayer, and a great-grandchild, Liam Monigan. He is pre-deceased by sisters, Sadie Starsiak, Augusta Vitro and Nonette (Dorothy) Williams, a brother-in-law, Francis Vitro, and a sister-in-law, Mary LaPorte.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Tuesday, November 26, at 10 am from the Immaculate Conception Church on Main Street in Hoosick Falls. Burial followed the Mass at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hoosick Falls.

Relatives and friends called at the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090, on Monday from 4 to 7 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to either St. Mary’s Academy or the Karen McGovern Memorial Fund through the funeral home.

Tom’s family would like to express a note of gratitude to his special caregivers, Carol Hanselman and Gretchen Yonconish, as well as his many special friends who supported him.

Grieving Family Has Car Vandalized – Reward Offered

William and Anne Bakaitis of Elm Street in Hoosick Falls were so happy with the birth of their grandson on November 5. Baby Daniel is the son of Brianna and Daniel Coonradt of Hoosick Falls, and he brought joy into his grandparent’s lives again. The couple and their daughters, Brittany, Brianna and Bethany, are still mourning the loss of their daughter and sister, Brooke Bakaitis, who died on December 10, 2011. Brooke was just 18. She had ACL surgery and died a few days later from a pulmonary embolism.

Christmas Trees Are Coming December 7

The Town of Hoosick Lions Club is again selling fresh cut Christmas trees. Come early! We again will be at the empty gas station lot just about across the street from Tops Market on Rt. 22. Our members are happy to help you tie your tree onto your car roof – please remember your ropes!

All profits go to our helping our community, so please do your part and support your local Lions Club. For a holiday stocking-stuffer, please support us by purchasing Lions Club Mints located at the following locations: Falls Diner, Hoosick Auto, Hoosick Federal Credit Union, Key Bank, Village Primary Care, Curtis Lumber, Weeb’s, Maggie’s Hair Salon, Picasso’s Restaurant or at Tops Market. All locations are in Hoosick.

Also on Saturday, December 7, the Lions Club will have a spot in the Armory for children’s ID kits. Our mints and box for eye glass donations with be there. A short DVD will run showing what we do with your used, donated eyeglasses and now hearing aids as well. Please support us at both events this holiday season. Our motto is “We serve!”

Carolyn M. Surdam

Hoosick Falls – Carolyn M. “Khaki” Surdam, 76, passed away on Monday, November 18, 2013, at her residence in Hoosick Falls, NY, surrounded by her family. She had resided there with her husband, Leo Surdam Jr.

Born on February 1, 1937, in Raymertown, NY, Carolyn was the daughter of the late Milford and Ruth (Cushman) Bornt. She was educated at schools in Lansingburgh, NY. Carolyn worked at Johnson Controls in Bennington, VT, as a purchasing agent.

She enjoyed bingo, bowling, playing cards, trips to the casinos and crocheting baby sets. Carolyn mostly enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She and her husband spent winters in Venetian Parks Estates in Sarasota, FL.

Survivors, other than her husband Leo Jr., include their children, Shirley White and husband Billy of Bartlett, IL, Leo Surdam III and wife Deborah of Hoosick, NY, and Gerry Surdam of Hoosick Falls, her sisters, Shirley Borter of Troy, NY, Ruth Bornt of Poestenkill, NY, and Emily Bornt of Melrose, NY, her brothers, Harry Bornt of Ormond Beach, FL, Ken Bornt of Melrose and Roy Bornt of Troy. Carolyn is also survived by seven grandchildren, Stephen Surdam, Tanya Brock, Leslie Rousseau, Matthew Steichen, Lauren Soto, Tara DeCicco and Alyssa Surdam, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by five brothers, Carl, Milford, Bob, Ray and Paul Bornt.

Funeral services are Friday, November 22, at 11 am from the Hoosick Baptist Church on South Street in Hoosick. Burial will follow the service at Maple Grove Cemetery in Hoosick Falls.

Relatives and friends may call at the Church on Thursday from 4 to 8 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Karen McGovern Memorial Fund through the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street, Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090, which is handling the arrangements.
