Hoosick residents Chris Luciano and Doug Everard have opened Blast-Off Restoration in the Farmers Technology Industrial Park at 2112 NY Route 7 near the Pittstown/Brunswick line. They have been setting up their workspace and acquiring equipment for about four months. Then five weeks ago they put a small plain sign out near the road that states “sand blasting,” and the jobs have been coming in. “There’s no one within four hours of here doing this type of work,” said Luciano.

The ninth annual EC Golf Scramble will be held Saturday, August 16, at the Hoosick Falls Country Club. This event is a benefit to support youth participation in sports activities in the Town of Hoosick.

On August 16, 1777, in a small hamlet of Hoosick called Walloomsac, a rebel force of roughly 2,000 men under the command of General John Stark decisively defeated a detachment of Germans, loyalists and native allies. This action diminished General Burgoyne’s army by 1,000 men, prevented the capture of important supplies located in nearby Bennington, VT, and set the stage for the American victory at Saratoga.

Hoosick – Marlene (Blakeney) Cipperly, 80, died Friday, August 1, 2014, at The Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Hoosick Falls, NY. Marlene formerly resided on Cipperly Road in Breese Hollow, Hoosick, NY. She was the wife of the former Dean W. Cipperly, who passed in 1992.
Born on October 10, 1933, Marlene was the daughter of David and Madeline (Fletcher) Blakeney. Marlene was a member of the Vermont Grange, NY Farm Bureau, Woman’s Farm Bureau, Hoosick Miss Softball, Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad and the Hoosick Falls PTA. She loved her gardens and going to her granddaughters’ events. Her life-long ambition was to be a nurse, but she became very satisfied being a LNA at the Crescent Manor Care Center in Bennington, VT. Marlene worked at Crescent Manor for 31 years. In her younger years she had worked at the Chelsea Nursing Home.
Survivors include her two daughters, Beth Cipperly and Nellie Miller, and the light of her life, her precious granddaughter, Sydney Miller, her sister, Jessie Mundell, her three brothers, John Blakeney and wife Violet, Raymond Blakeney and David Blakeney, her sisters-in-law, Mary Cipperly, Betty Kipp, Marion Cipperly, Vera Griswald and Becky and husband Bob Cipperly, as well as many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews and many loving neighbors. She is pre-deceased by a brother, Charles “Tom” Blakeney.
Relatives and friends called at the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street, Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090, on Monday, August 4, from 3 to 5 pm. The funeral service was held from the funeral home on Monday at 5 pm.
Memorial contributions may be made to either the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad or the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad Youth Group through the funeral home.

Getting someone to talk about repairs to the Hoosick Falls Country Club club house after the July 14 fire in the kitchen is like pulling teeth. Undoubtedly that is because the Board is still dealing with the insurance company and with repair bids. No one is willing to comment. What is obvious is that the kitchen is gutted and there is a giant hole in the club house ceiling.

The weather was ideal Saturday, July 26, for the first revitalized CiviCure fundraising event at the Hoosac School campus. On July 9 Elsie Marpe was in charge of the program. She read a poem on “The Flower of Friendship” and told us the State flower, dog and flowers we can eat and medicine we can get from flowers like aloe for burns. She told us about painting rooms a color and how it affects us, like blue for bedrooms; it’s relaxing. Elsie quizzed us on “The Star Spangled Banner” and our flag, “Old Glory.” She read us three jokes and told us how to get rid of unwanted telephone calls by hitting your # button six or seven times. It confuses the machine and kicks your number out of their system. Also, send junk mail back with your payment. She heard proposed on a radio station that we write “In God We Trust” on the back or front of our mail – it is our national motto. Great idea, just do it. She finished her program with a poem, “When I’m An Old Lady,” and a closing thought. The Lecturer thanked Elsie.
July 23 Meeting
On July 23, after the business meeting, the Lecturer had for her program an old fashioned Spring-Cleaning program. She talked about cleaning in the 1930s, 40s and 50s and how different it was from the present time. They used Omar Wallpaper Cleaner, that looked like Play-Doh. They would swipe the ceiling and the rest of the wallpaper. When they were done with the pink ball, it had turned into a dry, black glob. They also used Fels Naptha Bar Soap that was used for everything, laundry, floor, dishes and cupboards. They used Bon Ami Cleanser and Behold, a polish for furniture. Ivory Flakes was used on laced curtains and then they were put on curtain stretchers. Oh, the hurt fingers. Vinegar and ammonia were used on windows, before Windex. The Lecturer talked about the old wringer washing machines and the two tubs of water, one with clear water and the other with bluing in it. They had to put each wash through the wringer and in the clear water, swish around and put through the second bluing water, and then through the wringer again. Each load had to be done this way. These were hard days. The Lecturer sang the Duz jingle and the Rinso White one. These soaps were used later on.
The Lecturer had a game on songs that were Wacky Hits from the 40s and 50s. This was fun finishing songs like “I’m My Own” – and singing them. She had a reading titled “The Fence,” about a boy with a bad temper. His father corrected him quite foxey. She read a poem, ”Naming The Chickens,” and had a closing poem, “Do You Wonder?” on the many blessings sent your way. Refreshments were served by Marion Cipperly, and they were delicious.
On August 6 is the Rensselaer County Pomona Grange at Brunswick, covered dish supper at 7 pm and Baking Contest. Our next meeting is the Hot Dog/Corn/Pot Luck at 7 pm. It is also Bingo/Fun Night. Don’t forget wrapped prizes. Invite friends and neighbors.

Nearly 150 alumni and guests attended the 33rd Annual Walter A. Wood High School Alumni Reunion on Saturday, July 14, 2014, at the Pittstown Volunteer Emergency Corps. Master of Ceremonies, Ronald Seifert, was introduced by Janice Tate, who welcomed the group and led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Helen Filkins delivered the Invocation.
Following dinner, Ron Seifert gave a special welcome to the newest 50 year class, the Class of 1964, who were introduced by Janice Cipperly ’64. Attending were Elizabeth Davison, Donald Eighmey, Jennifer Fisk, Alan Frost, Ellen Gavagan Miller, Lester Goodermote, Richard Lassor, Beverly LeBarron Cummings, Douglas LeBarron, Harold McClellan, Sylvia Mello Silva, Charlotte Stevens Humphrey, Gary Tilley and James Whittet. Ann Sheldon Riedel introduced the Class of 1954 (the 60 year class): Shirley Andrew Palazzi, Helen Betner, Shirley Brownell Cottrell, Nancy Bulson Duket, Ellen Eighmey Carrolan, Alan Finzer, Beverly Kipp Perry and Sandra Pine Davis. Ron Seifert then recognized those attending from 1949 (65 years): Bud Bentley, Judith Bohmer Stewart and Helen McLucas Foss. The Class of 1948 was Robert Cipperly, Douglas Sherman, Marjorie Pine Herrington and Mary Weller Englehart. The Class of 1947 was Barbara Eldredge Brackett, Iva Hewitt Durkee, Gwendolyn McMartin Smith, Marion Siemens Cipperly and Evangeline Weller Brenenstuhl. The Class of 1946 was Elsie LeBarron Marpe. The Class of 1945 was Donn Brownell. The Special Class of 1944 (70 years) was recognized: Robert Morrison, Bertha Piritz Alden and Stella Sawtell Brownell. The Class of 1943 was Helen Brownell Filkins, Kenneth Herrington and Harry Michie. The Class of 1942 was Marion Goodermote Hynick and Winifred Griswold Ferguson. The Class of 1941 was Norma Brenenstuhl. The Class of 1940 was Gordon McNeilly and William Nugent, Jr. The Class of 1939 was Clara Sheldon Gutermuth and Kasmer Stempek. The oldest graduate attending was Eleanor McClure Fairbanks of the Class of 1929 (85 years) who turned 102 years young on June 17. Birthday wishes were given to her.
Those who traveled the farthest for the reunion were Sylvia Silva, class of 1964, from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Robert Strait , Class of 1960, from Ammon, Idaho. The program ended with Jim Whittet leading us in the school song.
Thank you and appreciation given to all for the generous voluntary contributions to the Fund for Repairs to the Town of Hoosick Swimming Pool. A total of $1,590 was given to the Town of Hoosick Supervisor for the pool repairs needed.
Thanks were given to the Committee, especially Charles Filkins, who does a tremendous amount of work on the programs. Also thanks to Charlotte Redden who made the centerpieces for the tables. The Committee consists of Helen Filkins, Janice Cipperly, Mary Rubino, Sarah Snyder, Ron and Joyce Seifert, Doug Sherman and Janice Tate.
