Heroin And Drug Abuse Follow-Up

The heroin and drug abuse follow-up meeting at the HAYC3 Armory in Hoosick Falls on June 7 was not nearly as well attended as the first meeting, but it was informative and helpful. About 50 people attended the session. No small number for sure. What those who came, including a contingent from the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad, learned was that, in this area, groups in Bennington, VT, and Rensselaer County are working together. As panelist Dr. Trey Dobson, Chief Medical Officer for Southwestern Vermont Medical Center put it, this is not just a local problem, it’s a regional and national problem. He said in a few years we will see a move from competition to collaboration among healthcare providers.

Hoosick Planning Board Action – Board Responsibility Might Change

At the Town of Hoosick Planning Board meeting on Monday, June 16, Planning Board attorney Denis King said that as a result of the combined Planning Board and Zoning Board meeting with Town Supervisor Mark Surdam, Zoning Board attorney Mark McQuerry had asked him to look into the Zoning Board taking over the responsibility for Site Plan Review. Legislators Brownell And Goodermote Offer Assistance Regarding The Hoosick Post Office

Rensselaer County Legislators Stan Brownell and Lester Goodermote are offering assistance to help keep a post office open in Hoosick following the announcement that the current Hoosick post office location would be closed in early July.

Brownell and Goodermote said they recognize postal service as important to residents and businesses in the Hoosick area and said keeping a post office open and in operation in the area is a priority.

The two County lawmakers said they would be willing to work with other government agencies to help find a new and suitable location for a Hoosick post office. The current Hoosick Post Office is on South Street just off State Route 7 and is slated to close July 3 due to an expired lease.

The Hoosick Falls Post Office remains open in town, along with post offices in North Hoosick and Eagle Bridge.

“The service provided by the Post Office is important to Hoosick. We would be willing to work alongside postal officials and other levels of government to ensure there is adequate and convenient postal service to residents in our community,” said Brownell.

“This is a service important to quality of life and business. We are ready to lend a hand if needed to maintain the current level of postal service in the area,” added Goodermote.

Hoosick Grange News

It was a good night on June 10 at Hoosick Grange. We had our business meeting with our Master, David Cornell. The Grange had much discussion on hydrofracking. After the usual business it was time for the program.

Martha Babbitt was in charge of the program on Flag Day. Martha told us many facts about the flag – like it had 13 equal horizontal strips. Do you know if the red or white strip is on top? She told us nicknames for the flag- “Star and Strips” and “Old Glory.” Can you name more? The first flag was adopted on June 14, 1777. We have had plenty of changes in the flag – it has been modified 26 times. We were told about the symbols of the flag. Red – Hardiness and Valor, White – Purity and Innocence and Blue – Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice.

Martha told about our National Anthem. It is the 200th anniversary of the National Anthem in its birth place – Baltimore, Maryland. It is celebrated on September 6 to 16. She had a granger read all the stanzas of the National Anthem, written by Francis Scott Key. Key wrote the poem on the back of a letter he had in his pocket, and he called it Defence of Fort McHenry.

Martha ended her program with a number of grangers reading jokes. The Lecturer thanked Martha for a very educational program. Refreshments were served by Louise Ciuk and Mary Remancus.

There are changes from our program book for June 25. Our next meeting on June 25 is Dairy Princess night with David Schmidt in charge. Refreshments will be by Manna Babbitt. Everyone is invited to come and meet our new Dairy Princess, Miss Abby Tarbox.

Hoosick’s Unknown Treasure

For all of you who have wanted to visit the Louis Miller Museum but work on Mondays and Tuesdays, the Museum is now open on the second Saturday of each month throughout the summer, making it available to many more people to visit.

The Louis Miller Museum, at 166 Main Street in Hoosick Falls, has hundreds, probably thousands, of fantastic historic objects and memorabilia on display. Interesting and informative, the rooms are filled with Victoriana, military uniforms, photographs, weapons, farm and home implements and more.

Beautiful Victorian dresses and hats, paintings, an actual Victorian parlor and lots of Walter A. Wood, Eberle Brothers, Harriet Hoctor and Grandma Moses memorabilia are there, too. In the Children’s Room you will find antique and classic toys and insect collections. Explore historic Hoosick through the old photographs and maps that you’ll find there.

Walk through on your own or get a guided tour for free. See and learn what Hoosick was like back in the day.

Hours are Monday and Tuesday from 1 to 4 pm, the second Saturday of each month from 10 am to 2 pm through the summer and whenever you see the “Open” flag flying outside.
