The Town of Hoosick Democrats and Hoosick 1st Party will be hosting a chicken barbecue on Thursday, July 11, from 5 to 7:30 pm at The Polish Hall. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy some delicious slow cooked chicken with potato salad, coleslaw, dessert and cold beverages and to meet this year’s candidates.
The candidates are Mark Surdam for Town Supervisor, Dave Sutton and Michael Hickey for Town Council, William Shiland III for Highway Superintendent, Tom Restino for Town Justice and Sue Stradinger for Town Clerk.
Tickets are on sale at Thorpe’s Pharmacy from Jim Monahan, Kevin O’Malley at 686-9460, Maggie Casey at 686-7367, Mark Surdam at 686 -0745 or Bob Ryan at 686-4857 and at the Polish Hall. Tickets will also be available at the door. Tickets cost $12.

Cheney Library Book Sale
The Cheney Library in Hoosick Falls is sponsoring their First Saturday Book Sale on July 6 from 8 am to 1 pm. Stock up for Summer Reading. All books, both hardcover and paperbacks, are four for $1. There is a large selection of non-fiction and fiction for both adults and children. So come and take advantage of this great sale.
The Cheney Library is located on Classic Street, NY 22, in the Village of Hoosick Falls. We are open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 1 – 8 pm, Tuesday 10 am – 5 pm, Friday 11 am – 4 pm and Saturday 8 am – 1 pm.
North Hoosick Fire Dept. Kids Dollar Dance
The North Hoosick Fire Department will hold the last regular kids dance of its 15th season on Friday, June 28, from 7 to 10 pm at the fire station on Rt. 22. Students ages 9 to 15 and who attend the locals schools are invited. The admission fee for attending the last dance is only one dollar.
At this dance, one of the students will become the 55,000th student to attend the firehouse kids dances since they began back in December of 1998.
Pool Dance
The final dance of the school year will be the annual pool dance at the Town of Hoosick community pool in Hoosick Falls on Friday, July 12. Tickets for the pool dance can be purchased at the regular dance this Friday. The Department would like to thank the students and parents for making our 15th season a success. Dances will resume on Friday, September 6.
Emerging New York Artist To Exhibit Work In Hoosick Falls
120Gallery90 at The Armory in Hoosick Falls is pleased to announce its fourth exhibition, which will run July 12 to August 9. The Gallery is excited to be showing recent landscape paintings by emerging New York artist Alessandro Keegan in Gallery90 and an exhibit called “Seeing Through,” works on beveled glass panes, by Hoosick Artist Guild artists in 120Gallery. Each of the first three shows in this exciting art space has been very successful, and this one should prove to be also.
Opening Reception July 12
Everyone is invited to meet the artists and view the work at the Opening Reception on Friday, July 12, from 6 to 8 pm. Music will be performed by The Brewsters. 120Gallery90 is downstairs at The Armory, 80 Church Street, Hoosick Falls.
Alessandro Keegan is a painter, writer and independent curator living and working in Brooklyn, NY. He received his MFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and has exhibited his work in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and other cities throughout the country. Most recently, his work has appeared in the journal Helvete (Punctum Books), and as the album cover for “Sinews” (Load Records) by the New York based band, White Suns.
Writing about the work in this exhibit, Keegan says, “The spaces that I paint may seem to have a familiar relationship with the world, but they are made entirely from imagination and memory.” Stylistically influenced by late nineteenth century and early twentieth century modernism, his paintings hang in the blurred boundary between representation and abstraction. Light, line, form and mystery pull the viewer into the spaces the artist has created on his canvasses. Keegan’s images are evocative and strangely familiar, suggesting a larger picture that the viewer must complete in his or her mind. They are a visible manifestation of the artist’s inner psyche, a window into something seemingly inaccessible: the natural and fantastic spaces that lay hidden within each of us. The viewer must bring his/her own associations to the work. Critics have called his work “simply transporting.”
The exhibition in 120Gallery is a collection of works on antique beveled glass panes. Local artists were challenged to interpret and explore both the different meanings of the theme, “Seeing Through,” as well as the process and effects of working with, or on, a glass surface. The results are remarkable and varied.
The Brewsters, Hoosick Falls’ very own von Trapp family, will be performing in The Owls Nest at 7 pm on July 12. Husband and wife, Mike and Cindy, and their sons Mike, Matthew and Levi, will entertain with popular songs.
Reynolds Foundation Distributes $12,600

On Saturday, June 15, Norma Brenenstuhl and Armand Rousseau distributed checks to nine local agencies totaling $12,600. The checks were presented to the Hoosick Falls Community Band for operating expenses, the Town of Hoosick Historical Society, the Hoosick Area Church Association (HACA) Food Pantry, the Hoosick Falls Girl Scout Service program and the Hoosick Falls Girl Scout Day Camp, the Cheney Library Children’s Reading program, the Wood Park Residents Association, the North Hoosick Fire Dept. Disaster Shelter Fund and the local Reynolds Foundation.

Hoosick Planning Board Action – Big Moose Has Plans

Emil Baker, owner of the Big Moose Deli and Country Store on Route 7, appeared before the Town of Hoosick Planning Board for a second time on Monday, June 18. Baker has acquired the house and property next door to his store. He said the house will be used for storage and the lot in the back and on the side of the house will be used for parking. A split rail fence will define the parking area. The expanded area can hold 20 vehicles.

The Karen McGovern Fund

Everyone in Hoosick knows about the Karen McGovern Fund. They have either contributed to the Fund, benefitted from the Fund or know someone who has benefitted from the Fund.
The Fund was started at a volleyball tournament at the Sand Bar in memory of a special well loved individual who died from cancer in 2000. Karen McGovern graduated from HFCS in 1986. She had an interesting and varied career that eventually brought her to law school. She was in her second year studying law when her life ended.

Hoosick Grange News
Hoosick Grange had its regular meeting on the 12th day of June. Master David Cornell conducted the order of business. The Grange discussed what they were doing for the Schaghticoke Fair. They also discussed the Hoosick Falls scholarships and are going to make some changes next year. The Lecturer reported that they went to the Girl Scouting Award ceremony. Samantha Brewer received the Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. To achieve this award she spent 150 hours putting together a brochure describing all the service organizations in the Town of Hoosick and who to contact for information. She got awards from many of these organizations.
The Lecturer’s program was on the subject of Flag Day. The Grange sang two verses of “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” The Lecturer told that in the late 1950s, soldiers placed American Flags on each one of the 260,000 to 300,000 graves at Arlington National Cemetery. Soldiers gave up their three day weekend to patrol the cemetery 24 hours a day through Memorial Day, to ensure that the flags remained standing. Martha Babbitt read a poem: “No Substitute for Men,” and the Lecturer read a poem titled “Dad” in honor of all dads for Father’s Day.
June 6 was D-Day, also known as The Longest Day, and the 69th anniversary. The Lecturer read about the invasion. It was scheduled for June 5, but storms forced General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Commander of the Allied Forces, to postpone the invasion for one day. Let us remember our troops all over he world and pray for peace.
The Lecturer asked how many grangers had anything to do with farm pigs? She read an article on a farmer and his wife attempting to put a ring in eleven little piglets noses. He said it was only a “twenty minute job.” Ha, Ha.
In honor of Wedding Days, the Lecturer had a word game – Wedding Jumble. Martha Babbitt was the winner and won the prize. She had an article on a water aerobics class for seniors. First thing – if you haven’t used your swimsuit in twenty years – will it fit? All the swimsuits were for young people, or the suit she liked didn’t fit, or they would order one for her and when she received them all four were the same size, and they charged them on her credit card. Most people would give up after this.
The closing thought was – Trouble in marriage often begins when a man is so busy earning his salt, he forgets his sugar.
Our next meeting is at 7 pm on June 26. We will meet at the Hoosick Historical Society Museum. Anyone can attend. The Filkins family is in charge of refreshments.

Hoosick Falls Community Band And Stardusters Concerts
On Wednesday, June 26, at 7:30 pm, the Stardusters of Hoosick Falls will present a concert at the bandstand in Wood Park. The Stardusters are a local tribute to the big band era providing music in that style of all periods. The Stardusters have been a Hoosick Falls band since 1976 when they premiered at HFCS during one of the spring concerts. The group was originated by the late Cortland Cottrell and continues today under the management of Cort’s son, Bill Cottrell, lead trumpeter.
The Community Band Summer concert series begins on July 3 at 7:30 pm. The hour and a half concerts under the direction of Bill Gaillard include marches, pop tunes, overtures and show music.
