Although the Town Hall referendum failed, Town Officials are far from giving up on the project. On Monday, July 26, members of the Town Council and Town Hall Committee held a public informational meeting at the New Lebanon Firehouse. The meeting served as a question-and-answer forum where community members had the opportunity to express their concerns about the project.

New Lebanon Community Garden Available For Area Gardeners
by Phillip Zema
The community garden at the Immaculate Conception Church in New Lebanon is flourishing. The weather has been conducive for growing crops, and those who invested in a garden are likely to reap a substantial yield – natural factors permitting. The benefits of the community garden are two-fold. On the one hand it provides an opportunity for people to grow a garden; on the other, it helps those facing difficult times, as part of the garden’s yield is donated to Charlie’s Pantry, the local food pantry in New Lebanon.

New Lebanon Town Board Action – New Lebanon Voters Reject $815k Town Hall Renovation Plan
by Phillip Zema
The $815k referendum to renovate the New Lebanon Town Hall failed by a vote of 182 to 88. The 270 voters only represent about 18% of the town’s electorate. At the New Lebanon Town Board meeting on July 12, there was plenty of discussion over why the referendum failed. Some speculated that a substantial portion of the community was simply unaware of the referendum. Others thought the town had little time to properly inform the public about the project—e.g. that a tax increase could be avoided. Accordingly, the public was intimidated by the referendum’s large financial figure. It was also mentioned that the struggling economy played a factor as well. Councilman Doug Banker added that there could have been a myriad of reasons for why people rejected the referendum.

Vine Cutting At Lebanon Valley Farmers Market
by David Flint
It’s all about growth – growing local food, growing the community, “growing the valley.” So instead of a ribbon cutting at the Grand Opening of the Lebanon Valley Farmers Market on the fourth of July, they had a vine cutting! Wielding the lopping shears were NYS Assemblyman Tim Gordon and New Lebanon Town Supervisor Meg Robertson. Gordon pointed out that New York State’s largest industry is agriculture, “not Wall Street.”
