Calvin A. Haynes of East Nassau, NY at the age of 24 enlisted in August 1862 at Troy in the 125th New York Infantry Regiment. His letters home to his wife Lucy have been transcribed by John Minitti of Winchester, MA, and are here reproduced, with some editing, courtesy of the New York State Library, Manuscripts and Special Collections.

Area Men Accused Of Deer Poaching

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) police officers recently concluded a blanket deer taking enforcement detail in the Capital Region and surrounding areas in conjunction with the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont. A number of area men were cited by DEC officers during this enforcement detail.

New Lebanon Library December Events

All of these events are free and will take place at the Library which is located at 550 State Route 20.
• December 2 – Holiday Movie Night – 6:30 pm – showing of a current film suitable for the whole family. Call 518-794-8844 for the title. Snacks will be provided.
• December 4 – New Lebanon Book Group – 11 am. The book to be discussed is To The End of the Land by David Grossman. Newcomers are welcome.
• December 5 – Crochet & Knitting Group – 6:30 pm. Bring your needlework, pull up a chair and share ideas and conversation. Newcomers are welcome.

Mountain Road School Hosts 13th Annual Holiday Fair

On Saturday, December 10, from 10 am to 3 pm, Mountain Road School in New Lebanon will hold its 13th Annual Holiday Fair. The cozy classrooms of the school’s historic Shaker building are transformed into a wintry wonderland with seasonal fun for the whole family and admission is free.
Children and adults can make gingerbread houses, weave a jump rope, dip candles and make a nature-themed candle holder, construct a pine cone bird feeder, take a cake walk or play in the game room. Younger children can browse for gifts in the Tiny Treasures room and visit the Pocket Lady. Locally produced jewelry, skin care products, pottery, chocolates, blown glass, hand decorated wreaths and other holiday gifts will be on sale, plus a unique selection of children’s books.

New Lebanon Town Board Action – Tax Levy Increase Held Below 2%

The Town of New Lebanon’s 2012 budget was unanimously adopted by the Town Board at the monthly Board meeting on Monday, November 14.
The total budget set forth is $2,085,885, which is $159 less than the 2011 budget. The largest appropriations go to the Town itself, $927,858, the Highway Department, $630,807, the Town’s ambulance service, $171,360, and the Town’s library, $135,000. The amount to be raised through taxes will be $1,297,763. This amount allowed the Town’s tax levy to remain below the State mandated 2% tax cap. “We can give ourselves a big pat on the back and a very small round of applause,” said Town Supervisor Margaret Robertson.

Benson Wins New Lebanon Supervisor Race By Wide Margin

The Town of New Lebanon has elected a new Town Supervisor. Republican Mike Benson, with 439 votes to the Democratic incumbent Margaret Robertson’s 266 votes, took the Town’s top position with just over 60% of the vote.
Benson thanked his wife, children and other supporters for contributing to his victory.  “I am really proud of the race that our team ran,” said Benson.
