North Hoosick – George Wilson, 86, of North Hoosick, NY, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, February 11, 2011, at his residence with his family by his side. Born on February 22, 1924, in Schaghticoke, NY, he was the son of the late George and Mary (Bryant) Wilson. George served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. While serving in the 2nd Battalion, 515th Parachute Infantry Regiment, George achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. He received several medals and ribbons while participating in the American Theater and European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaigns.

Hoosick Falls – Beverly M. Johnson Yavaniski, 78, of Dolan Avenue, Hoosick Falls, NY, died on Sunday evening, February 13, 2011, at the Hoosick Falls Health Center where she has resided since November.
Born in the Town of Saratoga on December 12, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mamie Gifford Johnson. She was the loving wife of the late Charles G. Yavaniski, who died on March 20, 1998. They were married on February 27, 1960, and Beverly had been a resident of Hoosick Falls since then.

Berlin – Almira Maynard Stark, 77, a Bensalem, PA, resident passed away Thursday, February 10, 2011, at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.
Born in Hancock, MA, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Pearl Haywood Maynard. She was a United States Air Force veteran who worked hard for her family.

Walter D. Doyle
Grafton – Walter D. Doyle, 78, passed away on February 7, 2011, at the Hoosick Falls Health Center in Hoosick Falls, NY. He had resided at North Shore Road on Babcock Lake in Grafton, NY.
Born on November 10, 1932, in Brooklyn, NY, Walter was the son of the late Walter F. and Dorothy (Brassell) Doyle. He was educated at schools in New York City. He worked for the McCann Erickson Advertising Company in New York until retirement.
Funeral services were private at the request of the family. Arrangements were under the care of the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street, in Hoosick Falls.
Grafton Baptist Church Ukraine Mission Trip

On Christmas break Josh Ferguson, Kenny Gardy, Michael Reger and Allen Lindeman, members of the Grafton Baptist Church, set out to the Ukraine on a mission trip. They left on December 18 and returned on January 1. Many Church members, friends, family and community members made this trip possible through their generous financial support and prayers. The group and their families would like to say a big thank you to all of you!

Roof Collapse In Petersburgh

A section of roof on one of the buildings at Taconic in Petersburgh collapsed from snow load on Tuesday, February 8, at 8:10 am. The building affected is across the road from Taconic’s main manufacturing plant, and it is used for inventory storage.
The company reacted quickly. By noon Wednesday, the affected area, a 60′ x16′ section of the shed, had been removed, the inventory formerly stored there had been relocated to other buildings on Taconic’s campus and cleanup operations were in full swing.

According to Pat Bakaitis, the collapse of the roof over his heavy equipment stored on Baby Lane in Hoosick was a loud roar that lasted several seconds Saturday afternoon, February 5. The full extent of the damage to Bakaitis’ equipment won’t be known until the roof is removed. Metered Billing At Last

The Village of Hoosick Falls will finally begin metered water billing. Residents and businesses will see the results with the new billing cycle in August 2011. The cycle is three payments for residential properties, made in August and November of one year and February of the next year, and twice yearly for businesses. The new billing plan was approved at the regular meeting of the Village Board on Tuesday, February 8, after the close of the public hearing on the rates.

Village of Hoosick Falls Board Meeting – Progress At Dougherty’s Corner

At the Hoosick Falls Village Board meeting on Tuesday, February 8, the Board approved a short term loan of $10,000 to Alex Koks for bank closing costs for construction on the Dougherty lot on the corner of Main and John Streets. The loan money comes from the Village’s small business fund and will be paid back with the Restore NY grant funds once the new building is complete and approved. Mayor Matt Monahan pointed out that Koks has put up several personal properties as collateral for the bank loan.
