Free Fishing Day Saturday, June 26, GLSP

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is sponsoring a family fishing day on Saturday, June 26, from noon until 2 pm at Grafton Lakes State Park. “This is a great opportunity for families to learn more about the great sport of fishing and New York’s natural resources,” DEC Biologist Joelle Ernst said. “This day is set up to teach participants about fishing and promote a rewarding activity that will last a lifetime.”

Hoosick Falls – Kirtland F. Stowell, 85, passed away on Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at the Hoosick Falls Health Center after a brief illness. He formerly resided in Buskirk, NY, and was the husband of the late Helen Elizabeth Stowell who passed on March 15, 1992.

History Of The Stephentown Center Post Office

The Stephentown Center Post Office was established on October 31, 1877 and was in continuous service up to September of 1980. At that time, Marion Schmich, who died last month, retired as Postmaster and the Stephentown Center Post Office retired along with her. Berlin Town Board Action – Berlin Lumber Referendum Set For July 19

Berlin Town Supervisor Rob Jaeger announced at the Town Board meeting on Thursday, June 10, that the referendum on the Berlin Lumber purchase will be held on Monday, July 19, from noon to 8 pm in the Town Hall. Absentee ballots for the referendum can be picked up at the Town Clerk’s office or requested in writing.  July 9 was chosen as the last date to request an absentee ballot since they must be returned by the 19th.

Hoosick Town Board Action – Local Law Passes, Another Set For Next Month

During the regular monthly meeting of the Hoosick Town Board on Tuesday, June 15, and after closing the Public Hearing, the Board approved Local Law #1 for 2010. The new law changes the length of time the Zoning Board of Appeals has to transmit a copy of a special permit application to the Planning Board from 30 days to 12 days. If the Planning Board does not submit an advisory opinion, “It shall be interpreted as a recommendation that the special permit be granted.” The law shall take effect immediately after filing with the Secretary of State. The Town Board had consulted with the Planning and Zoning Boards before implementing this change.

Referendum On New Leb Town Hall Renovation To Be Held Sooner Than Expected

Depending on which estimate is accepted, it will cost between $500k-650k to renovate the New Lebanon Town Hall building. The project itself requires a public referendum, but this event will happen much sooner than originally anticipated. The Town is in the process of applying for a $75k United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) grant. The grant’s deadline, however, is in early July, and the money cannot be awarded unless a referendum passes. The referendum was originally slated for August, but because of the deadline, it must be held on June 29.
