Six members of the Hoosick Falls Central School faculty and staff have been growing beards since November to help raise money for a great cause, The Isabel McGuire Memorial Scholarship. Students in grades 7-12 can purchase raffle tickets for which teacher they would like a chance to “shave,” which is an opportunity for the students to shave humorous and creative patterns, shapes, and designs into the beards. NYS Tax Department And Cheney Library Offer Free Tax Return Filing Assistance For New Yorkers
Earn under $62,000? You’re eligible to complete your federal and state return at a free tax assistance site. The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance and the Cheney Libraryto offer free e-filing assistance atthe Library, located at 73 Classic Street in Hoosick Falls. Individuals and families earning $62,000 or less will be able to e-file both their federal and state returns at no charge.

“Keep It Growing!” Is The Theme Of The Updated Agricultural And Farmland Protection Plan For Rensselaer County

A public hearing was held last week at the Brunswick Community Center for those interested in the updated plan to develop strategies to preserve, support and enhance Rensselaer County’s agricultural industry and resources. Attended by many in the farming community, representatives of the County’s Economic Development And Planning Department pointed out that in 2012 farmers paid over $5 million dollars in property taxes, employed hundreds of full and part time workers, and produced nearly 53 million dollars in farm sales. Lace Up And Run For A Cure
The Fourth Annual “Lace up for a Cure” 5K Run/Walk is on Saturday, April 16. Start time is 9 am at Wood Memorial Park on Main Street in Hoosick Falls. Prizes awarded to the top female and male runners. Register early for a chance to win a gift certificate ($10-$50 value) and save time on race day. The Kids’ Fun Run starts right afterthe 5K Run/Walk.
Registration fees are $25 by April 10, and $30 after; the the Kids’ Fun Run is $7. Registration forms available at Charity’s Hair Studio, Village Primary Care, or by emailing gyonconish@roadrunner.com.

County Presents PFOA Data At Petersburgh Town Board Meeting

Rensselaer County Environmental Health Director Rich Elder and Deputy County Esecutive Chris Meyer came to the Petersburgh Town Board meeting to present a map the County has created based on the results of the first 47 samples from private wells that were tested for PFOA contamination. The hot spot was of course the Taconic campus and its immediate surrounding area. High readings extended down Hewitt Road to some extent and areas downstream (north) of Taconic. But the area contaminated by PFOA does not seem to extend very far south of the campus, or up Toad Point Road, or across the Little Hoosick River.
