Eagle Scout Project Benefits Berlin Library

The Berlin Library is sporting a beautiful new bluestone patio. The new gathering place, outdoor reading room and venue for musical performances and summer  readings is located behind the Library building on South Main Street and is the work of Eagle Scout candidate Tim Shupe. A ribbon cutting ceremony introducing and opening the patio to the public was held on Saturday, November 1. Present for the occasion, among many others, were County Executive Kathy Jimino, County Legislator Stan Brownell and Berlin Town Supervisor Rob Jaeger.

Petersburgh Veterans Appreciation Dinner

The Petersburgh Veterans Memorial Community Center is hosting its annual Veteran’s Potluck Dinner with a few complements this year. On Tuesday, November 11, from 6 to 9 pm, the Town of Petersburgh will have an opportunity to come together as a community to celebrate those veterans who have given us the gift of freedom.

As customary, community members are encouraged to bring a specialty dish to share. Along with the good food and comradeship, guest speaker John Parkinson will be joining the festivities. He is a current resident of Petersburgh and was featured in the Memorial Day issue of the Eastwick Press. His story of being in the Chosin Reservoir battle also has been featured on the Military Channel and is in the upcoming book, Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Brotherhood, and Sacrifice, by Adam Makos.

Hank Bak, a former Petersburgh musician and square dance caller, will be recognized at the occasion. Family and friends of Hank graciously donated money to the PVMCC in his memory. Appropriately, the PVMCC purchased a sound system with the gift and the PVMCC board is obligingly dedicating it in Hank Bak’s name.

The evening will be topped off with music provided by none other than local musicians from the Hill Hollow Band.

There is no cost for this event, and the entire community is invited to show true appreciation for those veterans who have served to provide our freedom and way of life.

Letter To The Editor – A New Low In Grafton Politics

To the Editor:

Recently a flyer was circulated around our town by handout and mail that contained a derogatory likeness and comments about a Town Board candidate. This flyer indicated that research for this flyer was done by “Town of Grafton Board Member Rick.”

Please be aware that I had nothing to do with this despicable flyer, research or otherwise. I understand politics can be a nasty business, but this flyer sinks to new lows, never before seen in our community.

I am sure all residents of Grafton join me in condemning this sort of politics and demand that it stop, now and in future elections.

Petersburgh Man Arrested

The Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of Seth W. Sharpe, age 28, of Petersburgh, and Elijah Wilson, age 60, of Leeds, MA. After a week long investigation into a reported Grand Larceny that occurred on Tamarac Road in the Town of Brunswick, the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office arrested the two subjects who are allegedly involved in a number of reported crimes.

Alzheimer’s Events At The Center

On November 13 The Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation at Hoosick Falls will spend the day honoring the strength, passion and compassion of our residents and community members who struggle with Alzheimer’s. We will do this by having a day long Rock to Remember Rock-A-Thon from 7 am to 7 pm. We will be obtaining sponsors and rocking chairs to raise awareness of this debilitating disease and to also raise money for our local Alzheimer’s Association.

From 2 to 3:30 pm we will host a screening of the movie “The Genius of Marian” about a woman and her family as they come to terms with Alzheimer’s disease. The movie aired on PBS on September 8 and has received rave reviews. The screening will take place in our new Sanctuary – a place at The Center which allows our residents to relax, receive sensory stimulation and reminisce with caregivers.

From 7 to 8 pm Bill Hinrichs from the Alzheimer’s Association will give a presentation on Holiday Hints for Caregivers.

All of these events are open to the public and free of charge. Please join us as we support our families and friends rocking the day away for Alzheimer’s.

Staying Safe Online: A Free Program At The Grafton Library

On Friday, November 14, at 6 pm, the Grafton Community Library will host the third program in its ongoing “Get Savvy about Computers” series. This month’s program is about how to stay safe online.

Everyone has heard about the dangers lurking on the Internet – viruses, malware, email scams and more. Sarah McFadden, digital literacy coordinator for the Rensselaer County Cornell Cooperative Extension, will show patrons how to protect themselves while enjoying all that the web has to offer. They will learn to spot scams, identify risks and take home all the tools and tips they need to stay safe on the internet.

All ages and abilities are welcome. Attendees are invited to bring their questions about this or other computer related issues. Time will be available after the program for one-on-one help. Divinitress To Perform At The New Lebanon Library

Local acoustic folk duo Divinitress will be performing at the New Lebanon Library on Friday, November 14, from 7 to 9 pm. Their blend of harmonies and acoustic instruments give the duo a unique and uplifting sound. This event is free and open to the public, although donations for the performers are welcome.

Divinitress consists of singer-guitarist Tistrya Grace, who has spent ten years performing at coffee houses and festivals, and versatile Berkshire singer-songwriter Erin Laundry. They play a combination of original songs along with popular covers that encourage the audience to sing along.

A Guide To Online Grant Seeker Resources At The Stephentown Memorial Library

Learn to navigate and use the wide range of resources made available by the Foundation Center. The Stephentown Memorial Library will host a free workshop for nonprofit organizations that will introduce you to the resources made available by the Foundation Center – Grantspace, Foundation Directory Online and Foundation Maps. The workshop will be held Monday, November 10, from 11:30 am to 1 pm.

The session will be led by Julieta Mendez, Engagement & Outreach Specialist, Social Sector Outreach with the Foundation Center (http://foundationcenter.org). This class will show you how to get the most out of the Foundation Center’s online resources to help you gain the knowledge and skills you need to get grants, manage your nonprofit and improve your community. Mendez will offer tips on how best to identify funding sources for your organization, highlighting the electronic and print resources available for your free use at the Stephentown Memorial Library, a Funding Information Network partner of the Foundation Center.

The workshop will include a demonstration of Foundation Directory Online, the Foundation Center’s top tier searchable database providing information on nearly 100,000 grant makers and more than 2 million grant records and will provide an overview of the free resources on the Foundation Center’s web site.

Jerry Powell Basketball Results Clinic Returns to Hoosac School

Jerry Powell and his elite team of trainers will be returning to Hoosac School to conduct a tune up basketball clinic on Sunday, November 9. This clinic will focus on fine tuning the fundamentals prior to beginning the basketball season.

The clinic is open to boys and girls in grades 4-12.  The cost is $25 per player.  Payment for clinic is due at the door on the day of the clinic.  Checks should be made payable to Jerry Powell’s Basketball Results Clinic.

Clinic times are  9 to 11:15 am for fourth-sixth grades, 11:30 am to 1:15 pm  for seventh and eighth grades and 1:30 to 3:15 pm for ninth-twelfth grades
