Stephentown Veterans Texas Hold’em

The Veterans of Stephentown will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, October 12, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located at 35 Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5:30 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.
No advance registration is required, and a donation of $35 per player will be accepted and give the player 6,000 in chip value. Players can make an additional $10 donation at the door for 2,000 extra in chip value. This tournament will pay one place for every 10 players with a minimum of four places and a maximum of 9 places.
A free buffet will be served at the first break and refreshments will be available.

Fill the Bus Food Drive October 7 -13

The third annual Fill the Bus Food Drive, benefiting the Hoosick Area Church Association (HACA) Food Pantry will take place in Hoosick Falls from October 7 to the 13th. The students of Hoosick Falls Central School and St. Mary’s Academy are encouraged to bring food throughout the week. On Friday, October 11, at the HFCS Homecoming football game the bus will be open for the public to fill up. A raffle will be held this year at the football game for a 32” flat screen T.V.
On Sunday, October 13, from 9 am to 12 pm a truck will be parked on Main Street near the Baptist Church to collect food. Meanwhile the school bus will be at the Cow Plop Giveaway & Car Show being held at the Town of Hoosick Athletic Fields from 9 am to 3 pm.
The HACA Food Pantry serves the greater Hoosick Falls community by supplying food and toiletries to over 1,697 households per year. In 2012 42,273 meals were given to those in need, and that number keeps growing. This year the Food Pantry has served over 23,000 meals thus far and the holidays are quickly approaching. Please come celebrate Homecoming and support those in need at the same time by helping to Fill the Bus.

12, Saturday- Treasure Hunt in the Wild Woods at 10:30 am.  Team Deer and Team Coyote will each explore the Wild Woods and Shaver Pond Trail, looking for clues and signs of animals. If you succeed in your explore mission, treasure awaits! $3/person or $10/family of four or more. Space is limited for this popular program so pre-registration required: 279-1155.
17, Thursday – Nearly Full Moon Hike at 6 pm.  Meets at Shaver Pond Center at 194 Shaver Pond Road.  Enjoy a hike around Shaver Pond under the light of the nearly full moon!  It will rise early enough to light our way along the trail.   Pre-registration required: 279-1155.
20, Sunday – Fleet Feet 10k Trail Race at 8 am.  Partial proceeds to benefit the Natural Heritage Trust. To register, stop by the park office for brochure or a local Fleet Feet store.
25, Friday- Star Watch at GLSP at 7:30 pm. Join with members of the Albany Area  Astronomers and come explore the night sky.  Meets at Deerfield.  Rain date: Saturday, 10/28.  Call 658-9144 to confirm.

Local 4-H Participation In The Schaghticoke Fair

Labor Day to many in the area is synonymous with the Great Schaghticoke Fair. This couldn’t be truer for roughly 300 Rensselaer County 4-H members who participate at the Fair. 4-H is much more than cows and cookies, even though we see plenty of those at the fair. 4-H is all about growing kids!

North Bennington Master Printmaker To Show at 120Gallery90

The 120Gallery90 at The Armory in Hoosick Falls is proud to present a new exhibition featuring Recent Prints by Bennington printmaker Alexandra Eckhardt and new work by the Hoosick Artist Guild.
Eckhardt is the Design Director and full time artist at the Engraved Papers Collections for Cartier, North America. She has also worked with Cartier for many years as an engraving specialist.

Rev. Astrid Park Smith

Stephentown – Rev. Astrid Park Smith, 91, died peacefully on Thursday, September 26, 2013, at her home in Stephentown, NY. Born in Puhajoki, Finland, on January 15, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Elias Ilmari and Fanni Wiirrett Park. When she was one her family emigrated to the United States and settled in Brooklyn, NY, and later moved to Long Island, NY. Astrid graduated from Mepham High School in North Bellmore, NY, and later attended Eastern Nazarean College in Quincy, MA, where she studied theology and met her husband.
Astrid was called to be a minister by God and assisted her husband, Rev. Ernest D. Smith, at assignments at various churches in Jackman, Farmington Falls and Strong, ME. At the age of 59, Rev. Smith was ordained a minister and served at the Second Congregational Church in Williamstown, MA. In 1965, she moved to Dalton, MA, where she and her husband started the Berkshire First Church of the Nazarean. Throughout her life, Rev. Smith led a consistent Christian devotional life. She was saved and sanctified. Astrid was a wonderful mother and was very talented as a watercolor artist and painter. In 1988 she moved to Stephentown and was a member of the Hill & Valley Women’s Club in New Lebanon, NY.
She was the beloved wife of 70 years of Rev. Ernest D. Smith, loving mother of Brenda Lee Christiana of Stephentown, David Ernest and wife Bonnie Smith of Peru, MA, Janice Evelyn and husband Calvin Letson of Jackson, GA, Stephen A. Smith of Stephentown and Philip D. Smith and Jennifer LeBlanc of Leicester, VT, grandmother of Mark, Lisa, Joshua, Jadrian, Annette, Andrea, Ashley, Ariel, Melanie, Nathaniel and Cherie. She had 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was the sister of Merriam Williams of Minnesota and the late Ellen, Irene and Martha, the sister-in-law of Wilma, Dorothy, Elizabeth and the late Keith Smith.
The funeral service was Monday, September 30, at 3 pm at the Berkshire First Church of the Nazarean in Dalton. Friends called at the Church from 2 to 3 pm. The interment was Tuesday at the Maplewood Cemetery in Fairfield, ME.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Berkshire First Church of the Nazarean, 165 North Street, Dalton, MA, 01226, or to the Pilgrim Holiness Church, 421 Elm Street, Pittsfield, MA, 01201. Arrangements are by the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home in Stephentown.
