American wooden covered bridges will be the topic of discussion at the Taconic Valley Historical Society meeting on Monday, August 20, at 7:30 pm at the Berlin Methodist Church, South Main Street, Berlin. The evening will feature a presentation by Lloyd Schiesser of Poestenkill. Schiesser will discuss the history of American wooden covered bridges and their construction. The program is free and open to the public.

HAYC3 Road Race And Zombie Fun Run
The Pumpkinpalooza 5k Road Race will begin and end at Wood Memorial Park at 9 am on Saturday, September 29. The course weaves through the Village of Hoosick Falls and includes small hills, straightaways and few turns, as well as a nice stretch along the Hoosic River.

Berlin Library News
The Berlin Free Town Library announces its annual Book and Bake Sale. The Book and Bake Sale will take place at the Library on Saturday, August 25, from 9 am to 1 pm. The Library Board asks for your support through donations of new or gently used books and items for the bake sale. Book donations should be made by August 20. Baked goods should be brought to the Library the morning of the sale. Cash donations will be happily accepted at any time. Please support the Berlin Free Town Library.
Grafton VFD Breakfast
The Grafton Volunteer Fire Department along with the Grafton Ladies Auxiliary will be holding an All You Can Eat Buffet Breakfast on Saturday, August 25, from 8 to 11 am at the Grafton VFW – Fire Hall on South Road (County Route 85). Belgian waffles, pancakes, French toast, eggs (made to order), sausage gravy & biscuits, bacon, sausage, home fries, toast, orange juice, coffee and milk are on the menu.
The cost is $8 per adult, $4 for kids 12 and under and free for kids 5 and under. We look forward to serving you!
Brianna Sawyer Graduates From Navy Recruit Training Command
Brianna Sawyer of Hoosick Falls recently graduated from the Navy Recruit Training Command at Great Lakes, IL. Sawyer graduated as a member of the Triple Threat Division #936, which received Chief of Naval Operations Hall of Fame Honors for superior performance in all aspects of training. Sawyer performed as a member of the state flag drill and marching division, proudly carrying the New York State flag.

The Magic Flute Is First-Rate Opera

Hubbard Hall has opened a production of The Magic Flute, Mozart’s last opera.
This is an amazingly ambitious and successful production, with a 19 piece live orchestra and a cast of 28. It’s full of laughs and great music and a wacky plot which is entertaining if confusing, and also often stirring. Somehow the whole package works, and it drew an extended standing ovation on opening night.

Petersburgh – Geraldine Louise Smith Goodermote passed away peacefully August 8, 2012, at the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation at Hoosick Falls at the age of 88. She had lived in Petersburgh, NY, her entire life until moving to the Health Center in 2009. Geraldine was the daughter of the late William Smith and Miranda Sweet Smith of Petersburgh.
