Berlin – Irene Brownell Greene, 91, of Greene’s Brook Road, Berlin, NY, passed away on Friday, July 13, at the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation at Hoosick Falls. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, August 7, at 11 am in the Berlin Seventh Day Baptist Church on North Main Street in Berlin where Rev. Matthew Olson will officiate. A Time of Fellowship will follow the service. Contributions in memory of Irene may be given to either the Berlin Seventh Day Baptist Church or to the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation at Hoosick Falls in care of the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home, P.O. Box 361, Petersburgh, NY, 12138.

Born in Whitehall, NY, on May 31, 1925, she was the daughter of the late John and Olive Deo Jandrow. She was the loving wife of the late Sylvester C. “Si” Close, who died on March 9, 2010. They were married in St. Joseph’s Church in Stephentown on February 5, 1949. She had resided in Stephentown since 1948 and was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church.

Buskirk – Manuel Custodio, 77, passed away on July 31, 2012, at the Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY. He had resided on Youngs Road in Buskirk, NY, with his wife of fifty-two years, Isabel Maria Duartae Custodio.
Born on July 25, 1935, in Sao Miguel Azores, Portugal, Manuel was the son of the late Joao da Ponte and Isabel de Jesus (Cordeiro) Custodio. Manuel moved to the United States thirty-four years ago to make a better way of life for his family, which he accomplished. He was very proud of his children’s accomplishments.

The Berlin Disaster From Fifty Years Ago Is Still Vividly Remembered

From the time Berlin was established as a town in 1806, we have had our share of disasters and tragedies. From epidemics, blizzards, fires and floods to tornadoes, accidents and draughts, nothing in modern times has equaled the propane truck disaster, which occurred 50 years ago on July 25, 1962.
Nine people died of burns, one of whom was Robert J. McLucas of Pennsylvania, driver of the 7,000 gallon tanker loaded with propane that left the Plank Road at a sharp turn, hit a tree and exploded leaving the area looking like a war zone.

Water Restrictions In Hoosick Falls

The Village of Hoosick Falls has announced that there are water restrictions in effect for residents of Hoosick Falls and customers outside the Village that use Village water. There is to be no outside watering of any kind, including car washing, filling pools or pressure washing.
