Major General Patrick A. Murphy, The Adjutant General for the State of New York, announced the promotion of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their capability for additional responsibility and leadership.
Kayleen Waytkus from Petersburgh, serving with the 107th Military Police Company was promoted to the rank of Specialist.
Army National Guard promotions are based on overall performance, attitude, leadership ability, and development potential.
These promotions additionally recognize the best qualified soldiers and attract and retain the highest caliber citizen soldiers for a career in the New York Army National Guard.

Kevin Weber Of Stephentown Is A Norwich College Swimming Tournament Honoree
Norwich University used seven individual event titles to spur itself to the team title at the 2011 Great Northeast Athletic Conference men’s invitational on December 3 and 4.
Coach Laura Dunn’s team tallied 289 points, besting runner-up Regis College of Massachusetts by 52 points. The Maroon and Gold picked up three relay wins in the 200-yard freestyle, 400-yard medley and 200-yard medley. Individually, sophomore Patrick Bowden (Cumberland, ME) was a double winner in the 50-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events, while freshman Lance Webster (Windham, ME) won the 200-yard backstroke and sophomore Brandon Kelly (Centreville, MD) won the 200-yard butterfly. Bowden and Webster combined to set three GNAC records with Webster doing so in the backstroke, and Bowden achieving new league bests in both of his victories.

Hoosick Falls Registration For Spring Soccer Is Now Open
The Hoosick Falls Soccer Club offers an organized soccer program for children 4 to 18 years of age. For more information and to register go to hoosickfallssoccer.org.

Travel Team Deadline Is January 1
Travel teams are available for ages 10-18. Teams compete in the Capital District Youth Soccer League. Games are played at the George Helft Soccer Complex and at the fields of competing teams in the Capital District. The registration deadline is January 1. Winter Wild Edibles
Devin Franklin of the Flying Deer Nature Center will present “Wilds Edibles in Winter” on Thursday, December 15, at 6:30 pm at the New Lebanon Library. The program is oriented to adults and teens.
Once winter settles into the Taconics, it’s not too late to enjoy the fine flavors that our forests and fields have to offer. Trees offer teas, seeds offer cereals, roots offer repast, and even some greens endure the freeze. Participants will learn to identify the top ten Winter Wild Edibles that earn high ranking for flavor, findability and fun. Patrons may bring in their own samples to identify.

Texas Hold’em In Stephentown
The Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, December 17, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located at 37 Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.
A free buffet will be served at the first break, and refreshments will be available.
No advance registration is required, and a donation of $35 per player will be accepted. Players can make an additional $10 donation at the door for 1,000 extra chips. This tournament will pay one place for every ten players with a minimum of four places. The next Texas Hold’em tournament will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2012.

Born July 10, 1927, in Hoosick Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Martin L. and Millicent Vincent Manchester. He was the loving husband of the former Lois Case, whom he married in Hoosick Falls on February 11, 1951. Neil was a member of the Petersburgh Baptist Church.

Born on February 24, 1945, the son of Philip V. and Mary Seagroatt Riccardi, Jimmy, the fourth of eleven siblings, grew up in Berlin, NY. Jim was a proud member of the Marine Corp serving in Vietnam.

HACA Food Pantry “Holiday Food And Funds Drive”
Food and Funds are still being accepted for the annual Holiday Food Box distribution. Thanksgiving boxes were provided to 169 families thanks to the efforts of many community volunteers. Potatoes were bagged, boxes assembled, cases of food stacked, and fresh herbs picked from the HACA/Girl Scout herb garden. For many families this was the first time they had ever needed help. As one lady said, “I have always helped others, now I need help.” Many must choose between food and fuel; it is not an easy choice.
