Addressing High Rates Of Alcohol And Drug Abuse In The BCSD

At a breakfast meeting in Berlin last Thursday, February 4, community leaders heard some dismal reports about drug and alcohol abuse among our teens and pre-teens and some advice on organizing to counteract the problem. The meeting, held at the Berlin Seventh Day Baptist Church Hall and organized and sponsored by the TRACS Coalition (Together Reducing Alcohol and drugs in our Communities), drew about 25 interested people from the communities of Grafton, Petersburgh, Berlin and Stephentown.

As a banker with over 20 years of experience, I’ve spent my career analyzing financial statements and business plans of companies and non-profit organizations. My professional experience tells me savvy, financially stable organizations tend to plan for their long term financial futures, while less sophisticated and less disciplined organizations tend to focus their efforts on annual budgets and current problems. Correction In DARE Graduation Story
In the story on the DARE graduation ceremonies at Berlin Elementary School (February 5) we reported that Joann Popov provided a solo trumpet accompaniment to the singing of “We are the Future.” In fact it was Ioann Popov and Michael Zlotnick who provided a trumpet duet. Petersburgh Sgt. Works At National High School All Star Game
Army Staff Sgt. Jonathan N. Colon was part of a support team made up of soldiers from throughout the Army for the 2010 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. The Army sponsored the nationally televised football game played on January 9 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Artists are encouraged to come and draw the cafe activities. Music lovers are encouraged to enjoy the music, have a nice treat and peek over the shoulders of the artists.
German Dinner
A tentative date of March 13 is set for a fund raising German dinner cooked and organized by Ziggie Krahforst. Ziggie will be making sauerbraten with all the fixings and dessert, too.
Nicole Killeen On Sage College All-Academic Team
The Sage Colleges Department of Athletics and recreation has announced the Fall 2009 All-Academic Team. Only full time students who participate in intercollegiate fall sports are eligible for the team. The All- Academic Team consists of the highest semester GPAs of student athletes.
Nicole Killeen, a soccer player, topped the list with a GPA of 4.0. She is the daughter of Kim Killeen of Petersburgh.
Petersburgh Planning Board Takes Two Matters To Court

Brian O’Donovan came before the Petersburgh Planning Board on December 28 with an application for site plan review for a shaving mill he operates next to his gravel mining operation on Church Hollow Road. Boy Scout Troop #222 Goes Rock Climbing
Local Boy Scout Troop #222 spent hours rock climbing, exploring the caves and riding the zip line at the Albany Indoor Rock Gym last week. This weekend the Scouts go to Camp Rotary to compete in the Klondike Derby which is a fun competition testing their skills in winter survival, snowshoeing and sled racing.
