Beacon Power Begins Construction

A crew from LeChase Construction Services, LLC out of Schenectady resumed work this month at the site on Grange Hall Road in Stephentown where the Beacon Power company is building the world’s first full-scale flywheel-based frequency regulation plant. Having completed the basic site work that they started last December. LeChase is now beginning to construct the 20 pods, each of which will contain ten flywheels each one spinning at more than 20,000 16,000 rpm in a vacuum, designed to quickly charge and discharge power to and from the grid and keep it in balance.

The family of Sylvester “Si” Close appeared in the well of the Rensselaer County Legislature during the presentation period on Tuesday to receive copies of the resolution passed last month honoring his memory. Letter To The Editor – Facts That Should Not Be Ignored

To the Editor:
This month property owners are asked to vote for or against their school budget, either for the Berlin or the New Lebanon school.
The Berlin total school budget is $18,757,983 for 901 enrolled students. With a decreased enrollment this year they are still asking for an increase of 1.7%, staying just under the state legal 2% increase. This comes out to the significant amount of $20,819 for each student’s education.
The New Lebanon total school budget is $12,634,633 for 507 enrolled students. With fewer students this year and a 2.1% decrease in the budget, they are still asking the taxpayers for a 1.48% tax increase. This comes to a whopping $24,920 for each student and is $4,101 more per student than what the Berlin District spends.
Since both school districts do an equal job of education, the New Lebanon budget appears to be way over the top by about $2,000,000. These facts should not be ignored when voting up or down for this year’s school budget.

Stephentown Summer Youth Program

The Stephentown Summer Camp/Swim Program will run July 6 through August13, a six week program for children who have completed kindergarten through the completion of fifth grade. The camp will be held at the Stephentown Elementary School. Camp registration packets will be available at the Stephentown Town Hall, the Stephentown Memorial Library and on the Town website, www.townofstephentown.org. Stephentown Library Scholarship

The Stephentown Memorial Library is offering a $750 scholarship to a graduating senior who plans to enter a two or four year college in Fall 2010. The student must be a resident of Stephentown. Applications are available at local schools and at the Stephentown Memorial Library.  There is information about the scholarship requirements  on the Library web site at www.stephentownlibrary.org. Completed applications should be mailed to the Library no later than May 24.

Llamas Visit The Stephentown Memorial Library

If you have young children at home, we invite you to join us for stories, songs and an art project each Thursday at 10 am.  This is a great opportunity for children to socialize and parents to connect with other parents.

On Thursday, May 20, at 10 Aam we will have some furry visitors at our Story Time.  Isabel Krebs and Lynne Drumm will bring their friendly, furry llamas to meet the children and introduce them to this valuable animal.  Our stories and craft will relate to llamas, and there will be ample time to pet the llamas and ask questions about them.  Please join us for this fun opportunity to learn more about llamas.

To the editor:
I am writing this as a community member. I have great concerns regarding articles that have been presented and printed in the Eastwick Press. Depending on whom is hosting the conversation, the information that is given to the Community has been fiction and or the truth distorted. Famous one-liners that say nothing however can mean a lot. When I was sworn in as a Board Member, Bev Stewart and Tom Morelli requested that we be honest and open with the community. I was and am – for the more the community is involved in the School decisions the better our School District is and can become.

Introduction to Grant Research Online

Stephentown Memorial Library (SML) announces two sessions of the workshop, “Introduction to Grant Research Online,” May 11 at 2 pm and May 25 at 7 pm. These one hour workshops will provide a  step by step guide to using the Foundation Center Online’s database of almost 100,000 grant-giving  foundations and corporations. SML is one of only 400 libraries in the country that provide free access to this “gold standard”  grant seeking resource.

Texas Hold’em

The Veterans of Stephentown will sponsor a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, May 15, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located on Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.
No advance registration is required, and a donation of $25 per player is accepted. Players can pay at the door and can buy 1,000 extra chips for $10. This tournament will pay eight places; the first player out receives $25 back.
Hot dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, bottled water, soda and coffee will be available for purchase. For further information, please call Tom at 518-658-2448.
