The Stephentown Republicans who caucused Friday, September 11, had to make some hard choices for four of the seven offices to be voted on this November 3. The most controversial nominees were Neil Gardner for Highway Superintendent, defeating Aldy Goodermote 89 to 75, and Town Councilman Larry Eckhardt besting incumbent Tom Sherman for the Town Supervisor nomination, 99 to 68. Congratulations to Katlyn Willis as she won first place in the talent category for her vocal performance of “You Raise Me Up” by Josh Grobin. Katlyn had two minutes to perform, to show off her vocal abilities and to impress the panel of judges and a live audience at the Hyatt Regency in Rochester, NY, on Sunday, August 23, and she did just that. Job well done.

Stephentown Fire Department Hosts Paraco Propane Drill

It was 47 years ago that a propane truck went out of control on the Plank Road hill and caused the great Berlin fire. On July 25, the anniversary date, many people in this area still stop and recall the day with a shudder.
The disaster has left residents, and especially firefighters in Berlin and surrounding towns, with a healthy respect for the potential hazards of propane.
Stephentown Fire Chief Rich Burgess was pleased last week to be able to host a three-day emergency response and safety training program on dealing with propane leaks and fires. [Read more…] about Great Ball Of Fire!

The flooding in Stephentown at the end of July caused disruption for a number of businesses, one of them being the Scrub Board Laundromat and Car Wash on Route 22. Elmer Stuart said that the overflowing Kinderhook Creek resulted in dirty water that forced the facility to shut down on the evening of July 29. They were finally able to re-open on the following Saturday afternoon.
