JLS Foundation Finalists Attend Networking Day In New York

Five students from the Class of 2014 at Hoosick Falls Central School (HFCS) recently attended a networking day in New York City where they met with five professionals who shared stories about their careers, offered advice on how to be successful and pledged to stay in contact with the students to help them plan their college and post-college careers.

Panthers Play Tough, Lose In State Semis 14 – 0

The Hoosick Falls Central School Panthers’ football team season came to an abrupt end last Saturday when they were defeated by the Rye Neck Panthers. Hoosick Falls did everything they could, but the breaks just wouldn’t fall their way.

Hoosick Falls High School Senior Awarded National Merit Scholarship Letter Of Commendation

Hoosick Falls High School senior Katelyn Harrison recently received a Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program for outstanding performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Panther Bowlers Win First Match

The Hoosick Falls bowling team won its first match of the 2013 – 2014 season by defeating Stillwater on November 25 by the score of 4 – 0.  Total pins for Hoosick Falls were 3,677, and total pins for Stillwater were 3,012.  The top bowler for Stillwater was Charlie Dyer with a 222-645.  Top bowlers for Hoosick Falls were  Ken Marbot, 279-701, Stephen Surdam, 264-683, Josh McCart, 233-654, A.J. Hurlburt, 220-585, Jennifer Sargood, 219-568, and Kyla Day, 177-486. The top JV score was Jonathan Bossoni with a 178-483.

“This was a good score for our first match of the season.  You never know what scores you are going to get this early in the season.  Ken, Stephen and Josh bowled some great scores, and our JV bowlers from last year who moved up to Varsity his year, Jennifer, Kyla and A.J., did a great job!  Our total pins of 3,677 is a great total which I will take for any match during season.  The team knows that we have a lot of hard work to do throughout the season to keep up these kind of scores,”  said Coach Lang.

Shop On The Avenue At BCS

The Berlin HS senior class is looking for crafters and vendors for this year’s Shop-on-the-Avenue. It will be held Friday, December 13, from 5 to 8 pm at the MS/HS. Spaces are available for $10 and set-up begins at 3 pm. If you are interested in booking a space, please contact Karen Day by phone at 658-2515 or by email, kday@berlincentral.org, as soon as possible. The proceeds from this event will be donated to the high school Student Council’s Operation Support Our Troops to purchase items needed by the service men and women overseas.

Grafton Trail Blazers Logo Contest

The Grafton Trail Blazers snowmobile club is looking for a new logo. We are opening a logo contest to high school students from Tamarac High School and Berlin High School.

A finalist will be picked from each school by the Club. Each finalist will be awarded a $50 prize, and each school will receive a $100 donation to the art department.

The two finalists will have their submissions posted to our Facebook page and the public can “like” the logo of their choice. The logo with the most likes will be the winner of the Facebook contest and will be awarded an additional $100 prize and an additional $150 will be given to that school’s art department.

The contest entries must be submitted to the Grafton Trail Blazers snowmobile club no later than December 1, 2013. The schools will be notified by December 9 of their finalist and their logos submitted to our facebook page (GRAFTON TRAILBLAZERS) for the winner to be determined. The logo with the most “likes” by January 1 will win the contest.

PTA Holiday Craft Fair

The Walter B. Howard Elementary School’s PTA is sponsoring a Holiday Craft Fair on December 7 from 9 am to 3 pm in the New Lebanon Jr./Sr. High School gymnasium. Over 40 vendors will be present plus there will be a Chinese auction and a 50/50 raffle. The kitchen will be open from 9 am to 2:30 pm. There will be School Spirit items as well as many items and crafts.

SMA Holiday Cabaret – A Reunion Event

Christmas is coming; it’s almost here – mark your calendars for melodies and cheer!

On Saturday, December 7, St. Mary’s Academy is pleased to present, Holiday Cabaret – A Reunion Event.

Local talent David Sutton, Krissy Fauler, Shari Hand, Ric DiDonato and the Richard Cherry Trio will be returning to the SMA stage for what is sure to be a memorable evening. Doors open at 6 pm and our performers will take their spots on stage at 7.

As in the past, we will be offering a silent auction which always provides a wonderful opportunity to get some unique Christmas gifts. Light fare will be served, and there will be a cash bar.

Tickets for the event cost $25 per person and can be purchased at St. Mary’s, Thorpe’s and after each Mass at the Immaculate Conception Church. Reservations will be taken for parties of eight or more only and can be made by calling Pat Hayes at 686-4314.

So call your friends, get your sitter and join us on December 7. What a wonderful way to welcome the Christmas season.

Mountain Road School 15th Annual Holiday Fair

The Mountain Road School will hold its 15th Annual Holiday Fair on Saturday, December 7, from 11 am to 4 pm. The fair will take place at the school’s home in the historic Hand House at 4565 County Route 9 in New Lebanon.

“Come join us at the Mountain Road School’s Holiday Fair on December 7,” said Director of Outreach Anne Undeland. “This year’s fair is going to be better; there’s something for everybody. From the Mountain Road Singers to the Pocket Lady, from beautiful hand made wreaths to delicious food to the gingerbread decorating workshop, the Holiday Fair is the perfect way to get into the spirit of the season, visit our wonderful school and take care of your holiday gift list too.”

The Mountain Road Holiday Fair will feature activities upstairs at the school, including a “Tiny Treasures Room,” face painting, a “Make and Take Room” where children of all ages can make a craft to take home, Beeswax Candle Dipping and a Gingerbread Decorating Workshop. The “Pocket Lady” (a beloved Mountain Road tradition) will roam the hallways with her cape of treats to delight young and old alike.

Downstairs, local vendors will sell high quality crafts suitable for gift giving, ranging from hand painted watercolors by Linnea Rhodes to handmade organic creams and salves by Cari Naftali. Outdoors under the tent Greg Hostash and Cindy Ouelette will make their famous French fries with garlic aioli and other grilled specialties, while indoors Richard Green will continue to host the ever popular Holiday Fair Café. A concert by the Mountain Road Singers will take place at 1 pm.

Founded in 1975, Mountain Road School is known for its innovative, multi-aged classrooms, visionary nature based curriculum and nurturing child centered philosophy. The 15th Annual Holiday Fair is also an opportunity to view Mountain Road’s new home in the lovingly restored 1788 Hand House situated on 20 acres of fields, woods and streams

Panthers Extinguish Blue Devils’ Fire, 27 – 6

Twenty-three yards. Remember that number.

The first half wasn’t a Hoosick Falls Panthers highlight reel. It wasn’t the well oiled Panther machine we’ve come to expect. Passes were dropped, blocks were missed, runners escaped from normally sure tacklers. There were plenty of penalty flags and missed interception opportunities. The Panthers were, gasp, down 6 – 3 in the second quarter. With a season 318 – 0 edge in points in the first three quarters up to this game, this was a shock.
