Try Community Adult Education
The Berlin Central School District is partnering with Questar III BOCES in an exciting new endeavor to offer reasonably priced adult continuing education classes to all members of the Berlin community during evening hours. Working together, we have developed a total of 7 new, high-interest community programs that we believe will serve the diverse interests of the community. Several of the class instructors of these programs are actually from our community. A couple of the offerings are:
Community Parenting Roundtable
There are often times when parents need to talk with other parents, to discuss their concerns, brainstorm and share solutions. Parents can be so busy that they can’t always find the time to meet with other parents in the community. Join us for a monthly group designed to foster relationships and help parents network with each other. The group will be led by a child care professional from the Capital District Child Care Council for the first three meetings, the goal being for the group to be run by parents for parents.
Dates: Tuesdays September 24, October 15 and November 19, 6 -7:30.
Location: Distance Learning Room
Cost: No Charge (must have a minimum of 3 participants to run the class)
Knitting 101
If you would love to knit and socialize, then this is the class for you. This is an introductory class that will meet for four weeks and cover all of the basics. Participants will learn casting on, knit, pearl, increasing and decreasing, binding off, miscellaneous stitches and reading patterns. Students will need to bring two #10 knitting needles with them to class. All other materials will be provided by  the instructor. The final project will be a sampler scarf with all of the learned stitches
Instructor: Monica Shupe has been knitting since the age of 10 and runs a weekly knitting circle at the local library.
Dates: Wednesdays, October 2, 6-7:30
Location: Distance Learning Room
Cost: $39 (must have a minimum of 5 participants to run the class)
The contact person for all inquiries, registrations and payments for these community education classes is Pamela Mertz. She can be reached at pmertz@questar.org and 518-479-6869.
Minimum Enrollment: In order for classes to proceed as planned, a minimum of 5 students is needed unless otherwise noted. Proposed classes will not become “official” and allowed to run unless enough people sign up. Once you have submitted your registration, you will be sent a receipt.
Registration forms are available: Please print and fill out the registration form and mail it to Questar III BOCES Adult Education, Attention: Pamela Mertz, 10 Empire State Blvd, Castleton, NY, 12033.
Checks and Money Orders will be happily accepted as payment for these classes – important – no cash payments can be accepted. We hope to have online registration and a credit card payment option available in time for similar community classes being planned for the Spring of 2014.
Refunds: If a class you have selected is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment or inclement weather, refunds will be issued. We will let you know seven days ahead of time if a class is being cancelled. If you are unable to attend a class you have already paid for, you must let us know seven days ahead of time in order to be taken off the roster and receive a refund. Once a class has started, no such refunds can be issued.
School Closings Due To Weather: On days when the Berlin Central School District is closed due to inclement weather or other emergencies, the Adult Community classes will not meet. School closings are announced on local television stations and on our school website, www.berlincentral.org.
The Berlin Community Education Program is designed to be a self-sustaining program and has no bearing on the district’s tax rate.

BCS Sets Tax Levy

August 23, 2013 By eastwickpress

by Thaddeus Flint
“Every time the press comes to a District,” said Berlin School Board President Frank Zwack at the August meeting Tuesday, “it’s always with a negative outlook.” When it came to Board meetings at BCS in the past few years, this might have been true. There was almost always negativity present, and it was so pervasive and enduring that it was impossible to overlook.

Hoosick Falls Central School Opens Thursday, September 5

August 23, 2013 By eastwickpress

Tuesday, September 3,  and Wednesday, September 4, are Superintendent Conference Days – no students.
Tuesday, September 3 – Open House for Grades Universal Pre-k through Grade Two (6 – 7:30 pm).
Thursday, September 5 – Open House for Grades Three through Grade Six (6 – 7:30 pm).
Students in grades Universal Pre-k – 12 will begin with a full day of instruction on Thursday, September 5. Breakfast and lunch will be provided as usual. Students should follow their regular bus assignments and schedules.
Here are some helpful hints for the opening days of school:
1. Every year, all free/reduced applications must be filled out and returned before the first day of school.  Any questions, contact Heather Brooks at 686-7321, ext. 1708.
2. Have your children at their bus stops 5-10 minutes early each day.
3. If you cannot walk your child to the designated bus stop, have a responsible adult or older child do so.
4. Meet and get to know your child’s bus driver.  K-1-2 students must have a designated responsible person at the bus stop for pick-up.  Please be sure to come to the bus stop so your child can identify you to the bus driver.  If no one is at the bus stop for pick-up, your child will be brought back to school and you must come to school and pick him or her up.
5. Insure that your child knows his/her bus number. Please be sure to let us know as soon as possible if you have changed your location or your children are going to a new baby-sitter. This is particularly important for a younger student, in grades k, 1, 2 or 3.
6. Reinforce bus safety with your child.
7. Label all your child’s possessions with first and last name.
8. Insure that our school nurse and the Elementary School office have up to date emergency telephone numbers in case you need to be reached.
9. Always feel you can contact the Elementary School (686-9492) or High School (686-7321) offices for information.
