On Friday, January 18, the Berlin High School Spanish Club will be hosting a Pizza Night fundraiser at the high school from 4 to 7 pm. You can order hot fresh red or white pizzas starting at $8 each plus toppings for $1 each. Toppings include pepperoni, sausage, ham, mushrooms, onions, black olives, green peppers, broccoli, pineapple and jalapenos. Order by emailing Karen Day at kday@berlincentral.org up until 2:30 on Friday afternoon or by calling 658-2515 extension 209 starting at 3 pm. You may eat-in or take out.

Hoosac School Varsity Boys Basketball Team Wins BB&N Invitational Tournament
The Hoosac School Owls traveled to Cambridge, Massachusetts the weekend of December 29 to take part in the 10th annual Buckingham, Browne & Nichols Knights invitational basketball tournament. The field was comprised of both large and small schools from the prestigious New England Prep School League.
Hoosac, by far the smallest of the tournaments participants, opened its action against host BB&N at 9 am on Saturday. Hoosac dressed just seven players for the tournament due to holiday travel conflicts for several of their players, but that proved to be enough as they defeated BB&N 57-45 in a hard fought opening game. Junior Benas Maslauskas and Freshman Unique McLean led the Owls in scoring with 16 points each while Charles Wingate ran the point position superbly and contributed 11 points in the win. HFCS Championship Teams Recognized By New York State Assembly

A celebration of the accomplishments of the Hoosick Falls sports program was held as part of the School Board meeting on December 20. Assemblyman Tony Jordan was on hand to congratulate the teams as was State Senator-elect Steve McLaughlin and Robert Zayas, Executive Director of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.

After Newtown, School Safety Is The Issue At The HFCS Board Meeting

After having a packed auditorium for the athletic celebration which began the Hoosick Falls School Board meeting on December 20, the regular meeting itself took place in a nearly empty auditorium.
Superintendent Ken Facin said it had been a tough week following the Newtown school shooting, trying to reassure apprehensive students and holding meetings aimed at improving school safety. Facin said the State Police will be visiting the school once a week, getting to know the school and consulting on security issues.

The Hoosick Falls bowling team defeated North Warren on Wednesday, January 2, by the score of 4-0. Total pins for Hoosick Falls were 3,471, and total pins for North Warren were 2,398. Hoosick Falls now has a record of 35-1, and North Warren has a record of 24-20.

HFCS Students Study The World At War
Hoosick Falls Central Fourth-Graders Make Wishes Come True!
This year the fourth grade class at Hoosick Falls Central School continued to help support Make-A-Wish of Northeastern New York. This organization is committed to granting the wishes of children with life threatening medical conditions living in the 518 area code. Our goal was to raise $300 through the sale of Make-A-Wish Angels.

Automotive Students Visit Performance Auto & Body Repair

A group of Hoosick Falls students in Mr. Nielsen’s Automotive Technology course took a tour of the facilities at Performance Auto & Body Repair, a body shop located in Eagle Bridge. Students learned first hand the challenges employees in the collision repair industry face.
Owner Monty Wolfrum provided a detailed explanation of his business beginning with the computerized damage appraisal and ending with the financial constraints that must be adhered to in repairing a vehicle.

Common Core State Standards Changing The Shape Of Education At Hoosick Falls

Last year New York State transitioned from using Core Curriculum to Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as a framework for instruction. As a result, the academic focus at Hoosick Falls changed significantly. In eighth grade alone, CCSS has altered the way educators are teaching literacy and the experiences they are providing students.
