Prior to the Homecoming bonfire on Thursday, October 21, the Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition conducted a “Driving while Texting” demonstration at Hoosick Falls Central School. Students used golf carts to navigate a cone-lined course while texting on their cell phones. The idea was to show how texting can be distracting to drivers.

Make A Difference Day Success

Beat The Clock At Berlin H.S.
Wednesday evening, November 10, at 6:30 pm, department against department, faculty and staff will battle with plungers, balloons, ping pong balls and other “sports equipment” to Beat The Clock. In the style of the 1950s game show, spectators will cheer on staff members competing against the clock to perform wild and crazy tasks!
Proceeds from the evening’s antics will benefit the Class of 2011 Senior trip to Philadelphia and the Jersey Shore. Tickets cost $3 and are available at the door. Refreshments will be sold. This should be an evening of fun for the entire family.
Open House At Mountain Road School
The Mountain Road School has openings for children grades one through six. Come to our Open House on Friday, November 19, from 4 to 7 pm.
The Mountain Road School provides individualized attention, academic excellence, small classes, an innovative, nature-based curriculum and environmental study in partnership with the Flying Deer Nature Center.

BCS BOE Adopts Action Plan To Deal With Lead

At an emergency meeting of the Berlin School Board on Wednesday evening the Board approved an immediate action plan to deal with the problem of lead paint at Berlin Elementary School. Although there was much disagreement and uncertainty expressed about intermediate and long term solutions, the Board agreed that the plan for immediate action proposed by Interim Superintendent Brian Howard was necessary.

BCSD Superintendent Search

The Berlin School Board has selected Orion Educational Consulting LLC of Rochester to conduct a search for a new Superintendent. Robert Heinkel representing this firm in a presentation to the Board at a special October 6 meeting, said it would be a 3 to 4 month process. The firm does only one search at a time and during that time he would be in regular communication with the Board. At their October 19 meeting the Board passed a resolution to appoint Board Member Beverly Stewart as contact person, and they set up a meeting for November 3 to meet again with Heinkel and get the search started. Interim Superintendent Brian Howard suggested that it be specified that the new Superintendent would come on board sometime in June following the budget vote.

HFCS BOE Approves Siege Club

The Hoosick Falls School Board monthly meeting began with a presentation from Science Teacher Anthony Malikowski about the HFCS team’s experience building a machine to compete in the recent pumpkin chunkin’ contest at the Pumpkinpalooza Festival. Their machine, called Grape Shot, won the contest, and the students who participated were so fired up they wanted to do more of this kind of thing. Malikowski proposed a Siege Engineering Club and talked of organizing interscholastic competitions for siege machines. The Board approved the new Club later in the meeting.
