Hoosick Falls Schools Superintendent Ken Facin said he has been working with the Beijing School system to develop an exchange program which would initially bring a group of Chinese students to Hoosick Falls to study but which might eventually allow Hoosick Falls students to study in China as well. Facin described a visit from Chinese representatives of the Beijing School system to the Hoosick Falls school. They were quite impressed with the school and its programs and facilities, and they were eager to bring some of their students here to study.

Stephentown Adopts Budget
by David Flint
Stephentown’s Budget for 2013, adopted on Monday by the Town Board, is basically the same as the Preliminary Budget that was presented last month at a public hearing. Projected spending remains the same at $1,261,972 and the increase in the tax levy stays within the cap at 2.2% (or 1.8% when the Fire District budget, unchanged from last year, is included). Town Supervisor Larry Eckhardt pointed out that $10,000 less will be taken from the Unexpended Fund Balance as the Board now projects a 14% increase from County sales tax revenue rather than the 10% that was projected in the Preliminary Budget.

Petersburgh Town Board – No Action On Energy Efficiency
by Alex Brooks
After the Board was less than enthusiastic last month about having an energy audit done on the Petersburgh Town Hall, Petersburgh Supervisor Siegfried Krahforst invited two guest speakers to address the Board about grants for improving energy efficiency in public buildings. One was Linda von der Heide, the Principal Planner for Rensselaer County, and the other was Don Fletcher of the engineering firm Barton & Loguidice. Both were very knowledgeable about what was available generally from government or private grants, but neither was able to point to specific programs that would be available to the Town for specific projects.

Berlin Town Board Action, Part Two – Bridges
by Kieron Kramer
At the Berlin Town Board meeting on Thursday, November 8, not all the highway talk was about buying the new truck which was reported last week. Highway Superintendent Jim Winn also informed the meeting that the bridge on Satterlee Hollow Road had been red flagged. By the Thursday of the meeting Winn had already had the bridge repaired, and the red flag was removed. The ibeams under the bridge decking “were getting bad” so metal plates and poured concrete were put under them by Dave Goodermote Construction. Winn added that the Department is getting ready for winter and is finishing patching, having recently just done some patching on Cherry Plain Square.

Hoosick Planning Board Action
by Bea Peterson
The first to appear before the Planning Board at its Monday, November 19, meeting was Kendal Baker. He was representing the Nelson family that has a farm on Pine Valley Road. This was an initial conference. The Nelsons wish to divide the 365 acre property into three parcels for a simple subdivision. The first parcel would consist of the main farmhouse and barns and cleared land of approximately 171 acres. The second parcel would consist of a small bungalow with 167 acres and the third parcel would be a 27 acre wooded lot. Baker explained that parcel two contains a spring that would require a water easement. Baker will return to the Board next month with the property survey.
