Berlin July 4th Parade Committee Sets 2015 Theme – Participants Invited

Legend has it that the moon is made of cheese, the earth is flat, a sea serpent swims in Loch Ness and Big Foot prowls the woods of the northwest. We’ve all heard some Tall Tales and now the Berlin July 4th Parade Committee invites you to tell your Tall Tales with a float in the 2015 parade which kicks off at 11 am on Saturday, July 4. Tell everyone your tallest tale and maybe even win a cash prize for doing it. There is no entry fee. Floats will be judged in the following categories: Grand Prize, Theme Prize, Prettiest and Funniest. Hey did you hear the one about…….

Ribbons will be awarded for marching groups, cars, boats, antique equipment, decorated bicycles, costumed walkers and equestrian groups. Awards will also be presented to fire companies for best appearing and most in line. Participants should arrive by 9:30 am for line-up. Judging begins promptly at 10 am.

Entry forms will be mailed by the first of June to all past participants. Please notify us if your contact information has changed or if you do not receive a form and would like one sent to you. Hoosac Students Help Hoosick Historical Society

The Center Sponsors A Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser

The Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation at Hoosick Falls, is sponsoring a delicious spaghetti dinner as a fundraiser for a co-worker who lost her home and pets in a tragic fire this winter.  Music will be provided for our patrons, by the fabulous saxophone quartet, The Four of Us. The dinner will take place on March 28 at The Eagles on 35 First. Street in Hoosick Falls.  Dinner will be served  4:30 to 6 pm. Take-out meals will be available.  The tickets are $7 in advance and $9 at the door. Advance tickets will be sold until March 26, in the lobby of The Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation at 21 Danforth Street in Hoosick Falls. Petersburgh Library Activities

The Petersburgh Public Library will present Ariel Dunn showing pictures and telling about her three week trip to Africa, her safari and her climb up Mount Kilimanjaro.  She will be talking about how she planned the trip, chose the company, and what it was like on the mountain.   She will also be describing her safari, the parks visited and animals seen and just a little about what it was like to be there, her impressions of how people live and how it is different.  She can answer questions on her decision making and assist if someone is interested in going on such a trip. This program will be held on Wednesday, March 25 at 7 pm at the library.  Everyone is invited to attend and see another part of the world through photography.

Story hour continues on Tuesday mornings at 11 am for preschoolers and their caregivers.  March 10 will feature the wind and the month of March.  March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day and that will be celebrated at story hour.  March 24 will be “Animals Everywhere” and March 31 it will be “Build, Drive, Ride – Cars and other Machines”,  There will be no story hour on April 7 due to school vacation.

The book discussion group will meet on Wednesday, March 11 at 7 pm to discuss the book The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert.  Copies of the book are available at the library and new members are welcome.  If you have read the book please join us for the discussion.

Ladies Auxiliary Ukulele Orchestra To Perform At New Lebanon Library

The Ladies Auxiliary Ukulele Orchestra will perform at the New Lebanon Library on Friday,  March 13,  at  7 pm. This event is free and open to the public, although donations for the performers are appreciated.

Formed in 1994, The Ladies Auxiliary Ukulele Orchestra includes songwriter and educator Bernice Lewis, and educator Bernie McMahon, as well as surprise guests. They perform both originals and reinvented standard favorites. Close-cropped harmonies and unrestrained ukulele strumming produce a highly original sound. Their sets boast something from every era, ranging from Mozart to Radiohead, all of which benefit from fresh arrangements and a vocal delivery with tongues buried firmly in cheeks. Nothing is sacred in the Ladies’ quest for suitable material.

Berkshire Musician Robin O’Herin To Perform At New Lebanon Library

Berkshire musician Robin O’Herin will be performing at the New Lebanon Library on Friday, March 20, from 6:30 to 8 pm. This event is free and open to the public, although donations for the performer are appreciated.

A 2013 Boston Blues Challenge Finalist, Robin O’Herin is a touring blues and gospel musician, specializing in historically rich, often interactive concerts og blues, gospel, and traditional American music. Her performances are warm, affirming experiences which explore the music of the Delta and Piedmont regions of the South. Song selections may include Robert Johnson, Blind Willie Johnson and O’Herin’s own original blues and fingerstyle ballads.

Grafton Library Events

Active Parenting Class At Grafton Community Library

Grafton Community Library will host a four session class for parents of children in grades k-5 with the first class being held on Saturday, March 14 at 10:30 am. “Active Parenting Now,” taught by Jill Augustine, is designed to support parents by offering skills to redirect misbehavior and sidestep power struggles, discipline while teaching responsibility, prevent young people from experimenting with alcohol and other drugs, communicate effectively with children, and explore and encourage nonviolent conflict resolution inside the home and out. Skills for Job Seekers At Grafton Community Library

Grafton Community Library’s “Skills For Job Seekers” program series is underway with seven free classes scheduled between now and June that will cover all aspects of finding and applying for work, including effective resume writing, computer skills for job seekers, acing the job interview, and using social media for your job search. Classes will be taught by experts from Rensselaer County One Stop and Cornell Cooperative Extension. The next class will be held March 21 at 10:30 am and will cover online resources for developing computer related skills such as Microsoft Office, coding, social media, and more. Grafton Library staff and community volunteers are also available by appointment on an ongoing basis to provide one-on-one help with all aspects of patrons’ job searches. March 11, 18, 25 (Wednesdays) – Kid’s Stuff

Small Wonders Storytime – 10 am. Songs, movement activities and age-appropriate stories for our younger patrons and their caregivers. For toddlers up to 35 months.

Preschool Story Hour – 11 am. Story hour includes crafts, songs, and movement activities. For 35 months to 5 yrs.

March 10, 24 – Film

Oscar Film Series – 6:30 pm. Free screening of one of this years Best Picture nominees. Call for title.

March 6 – Music

Coffeehouse Night with Linda Worster – 6 pm. An evening of acoustic music with this Berkshire favorite. Donations for the performer appreciated.

March 9, 23 (every other Monday) – Community

Study the Constitution – 7 pm. Bi-weekly discussion group focusing on the study of the Constitution. Interested participants should bring their questions and be ready to share their opinions.

March 12 – Film

Afternoon Movie for Kids – 1 pm. Join us for a screening of the current film suitable for the whole family. Call for title.

March 13 – Music

The Ladies’ Auxiliary Ukulele Orchestra – 7 pm. Berkshire musicians Bernice Lewis and Berni McMahon as well as surprise guests perform ukulele music ranging from Mozart to Radiohead. Donations for the performers appreciated.

March 17, 18 – Art

Learn to Draw Still Life – 7 pm. Two part workshop in which participants will explore the techniques and methods used in creating still life and will work from a single subject supplied by the instructor. Participants should bring their own pencil, charcoal, oil pastel or other medium (no paint, please) and also should supply their own drawing paper.

March 19 – Crafts

Family Crafts Night – 6:30 pm. Join us and make your own duct tape catchall. All materials provided. For ages 5 and up.

March 20 – Music

Robin O’Herin in concert– 6:30 pm. A historically rich, interactive concert that includes original and traditional American music that explores the music of the Delta and Piedmont regions of the South. Donations for the performer appreciated.

March 26 – Crafts

Adult Crafts Night – 6:30 pm. Join us and make a decoupage bracelent. All materials provided. For adults and teens.

March 27 – Film

Family Movie Night – 6:30 pm. Join us for a screening of a current film suitable for the whole family. Call for title.

March 28 – Kid’s Stuff

Paws-to-Read – 9 am. Therapy dogs come to the library and children read to their furry friends. And, of course, the dogs listen! Please call to register.

March 31 – Kid’s Stuff

Block Party: Legos in the Library! – 4 to 5:30 pm. Lego club for kids. We provide the Legos and will display all creations until the next club.
