Petersburgh Roads Severly Damaged By Irene; A Bridge And A Road Are Gone

Most Roads Were Passable By Tuesday

The roads in Petersburgh sustained extensive damage from the heavy rain brought by Hurricane Irene. The Town Highway crew has been working from 6 am until 8 or 9 at night since Sunday trying to get the roads repaired and re-opened. Town Highway Superintendent Ray Harrison said, as of Tuesday afternoon, that no one was stranded any more – everybody has a way to drive out, even if it is sometimes on a rather rough road.

Grafton Hit Hard By Hurricane Irene; Parts of Route 2 Destroyed

Hurricane Irene was somewhat inconsistent in her treatment of towns in the southern Eastwick area. There was damage and destruction everywhere, but in some parts of the area she was much more savage than in others.
The Town of Grafton was hard hit. Town Highway Superintendent Herb Hasbrouck labeled a “disaster” the havoc wreaked by flood waters on a six mile stretch of Route 2 running through Grafton and Brunswick. Hasbrouck said there was a lot of road damage throughout the Town but, as of Wednesday afternoon, the only roads besides Route 2 still closed were Johnson Road, Steve O’Dell Road and Fox Hollow Road.

Almost Isolated Berlin Responds To Hurricane Irene

In Berlin, according to Town Supervisor Rob Jaeger, it seemed the only way out of Town after 5 pm on Sunday was Bly Hollow and Taborton Roads. During the storm the Town took the initiative and notified the State that they were closing State Route 22 to the north because of water a foot and a half deep rushing over it at Goodell Road. They also notified the County that they were closing County Route 40, the Plank Road, because large sections of it were washed out.

Hoosick And Hoosick Falls Mostly Spared By Hurricane Irene

Residents of the Town of Hoosick and the Village of Hoosick Falls are counting their blessings after Hurricane Irene. Compared to neighboring communities such as Petersburgh, Grafton, Bennington and Troy, the Town and Village were relatively unscathed. Rain from the west fell in Hoosick on and off late Saturday afternoon and evening, then stopped. Sometime after midnight the steady rain from Irene began and was continuous until late Sunday evening. When the rain stopped, the winds picked up, though they were not as severe as anticipated.
