Berlin Budget Holds The Line At A 1.8% Tax Increase

At the Town Board meeting on November 11, the Berlin Town Board voted 3-2 to adopt the 2011 budget with a 1.8% tax levy increase when combined with the budget for the Berlin Fire District. Town Supervisor Rob Jaeger and Board Members Carl Greene and Sheila Hewitt voted to approve the budget; Board Members Richard von Schilgen and James Saunders voted no. The total amount of projected expenditures, including $204,855 for the Fire District, comes to $585,270.

Stephentown Sets Tax Levy Increase At 5.2 %

At a special meeting on November 19, the Stephentown Town Board adopted a budget for 2011 that calls for an overall increase in the tax levy of 5.2%. This figure includes the Fire District budget. The Board at a budget hearing and workshop on November 8 pared down the tentative budget presented at their meeting in October that would have resulted in a levy increase of close to 11%.

Berlin Central School Students Honor Veterans

On November 9, Berlin High School students presented a video tribute to Veterans Day; local veterans were honored guests.
A team of more than 15 students who call themselves “super troopers” created the video sparked by an idea from Rachael Bly, a junior. Rachael said, “I started thinking about Veterans Day and what it means to people and thought a video would raise awareness of how important it should be to everyone.”

HFCS Gets Its Report Card

At the Hoosick Falls School Board November meeting District Superintendent Ken Facin discussed the 2009-2010 School Report Card for the District.
The District as a whole is in good standing, but there were two areas of concern, English test results for students with disabilities in elementary and middle school and the graduation rate. In all areas except these two the District exceeded the performance objectives by large margins.

Berlin Book Club Celebrates

This year the Stephanie Flint Book Club (also known as the Berlin Book Club) celebrated the twentieth year of its founding by a group of Berlin residents who wished to share their love of reading. Four of those founders, Helene Calman, Cheryl Hawksby, Eleanor Montgomery and Paula Paulson, then Library Director, were present at the celebration. A celebratory tea was held on Sunday, November 7, at the home of Helene Calman. Twelve members attended and enjoyed delicious refreshments along with the readings of three short stories. But best of all everyone enjoyed socializing with one another while they made plans for next year.

Volunteers Make A Difference At The HACA Food Pantry

Volunteers made the difference in preparing for Thanksgiving at the HACA Food Pantry. Employees of St. Gobain filled the Pantry freezer with turkeys for the Thanksgiving boxes. Food Pantry volunteers unloaded and stocked over 6,000 pounds of food from the Regional Food Bank of NENY. Members of the HF Republican Committee and the Hoosick Rescue Squad assisted in assembling boxes on Thursday evening and returning on Friday evening to bag potatoes and fill and stack boxes. The potatoes were donated by Moses Vegetable Stand. Other volunteers will pick up pies and turkeys on Monday in time for distribution in the evening.

The Colors of the Rainbow: Girl Scouts Come Together

On Friday, November 5, more than 65 Girl Scouts, ranging in age from 5 to 17, and many of their leaders and mothers, came together in a burst of color for their annual “lock-in” sleepover at St. Mary’s Academy in Hoosick Falls. This year’s theme of Colors of the Rainbow gave girls an opportunity to show their differences in ages, shapes, sizes, colors, backgrounds, personalities and interests while also representing their unity and the bright futures that Girl Scouts is helping them to achieve.

HFCS Drama Club Presentations Are A Hit

Giggles, titters and laughs were continuous during this past weekend’s performances by the HFCS Drama Club. It took 17 performers to carry off the one act “Cabfare for the Common Man,” with a simple set, a fast pace and clever lines. Two visible and two invisible performers made for the laughable “Presentation: Understanding a Satire.” Then came The Importance of Being Earnest.
