Letter To The Editor – Going Postal!

To the Editor:
This letter is to inform Stephentown residents that the “local” sign on the mail drop inside the Stephentown Post Office is missing for a reason. Their local mail is no longer being handled locally but is now being sent into Albany where it hopefully will return in a day or two to Stephentown. Having worked as a clerk/postmaster replacement at the Stephentown Post Office for thirty years, I am shocked and appalled that a job that probably took no more than a total of ten or fifteen minutes a day to sort through and handle locally mailed letters is no longer being offered as a service to the Town’s residents. Just one more reason to use email instead of the Postal Service!!!

Now that Grafton and Stephentown Elementary schools have been officially closed due to the unfortunate decision from part of the (former and not all) Board of Education members (not the community) and a former administrator; all of the students will be housed at the Berlin Elementary School (BES). I am responding to the letter from Mr. Bob Rubin, who expressed concern over Fishers (martes pennanti) as a threat to domestic cats and dogs (Eastwick Press August 20 issue). I am sorry for the loss of his cat. We, too, are cat lovers and have concerns about their interactions with other creatures. Panther Boys Soccer Has High Hopes For The Season

The Hoosick Falls Varsity Boys soccer team ended last season with a loss at the Sectional Semifinals, and the team is very sure that that is not how it will be ending this year. With the new additions to the team and some position rearrangement, Coach Josh Meyer is expecting a better outcome. “We lost some great seniors last year, but the new boys are great; they are more than capable of filling in the holes. The 2010 Lady Panthers Are At It Again

Hoping for back to back league championships the girls came out strong competing against Maple Hill and Lansingburgh in two scrimmages played on their home pitch on September 7. They tied the first game 2-2 with a goal from Meaghan McKee and another quick goal from a new addition to the team, Emma Frickie. In their second game of the day they started strong and ended strong winning 2-0. Seventh-grader Jordyn Hanes and tenth-grader Grace Delurey each added one assist and one goal.

Story Of Mum Bett At The Stephentown Historical Society

Authors David Levinson and Emilie Piper will tell of Elizabeth Freeman, also known as Mum Bett, at the Stephentown Historical Society meeting on Monday, September 13, at 7:30 pm.  The meeting will be at the Stephentown Fire Hall on Grange Hall Road, Stephentown.  It is free and open to the public. The Founding Families Of Berlin And Petersburgh

Words From The Hills

“Words from the Hills,” a monthly event at the Stephentown Library for those who share a love of finely crafted words, will be Sunday, September 12, at 3 pm. It is a roundtable for sharing poetry, short stories and narratives.
Both writers and readers are invited to participate, sharing their writings or perhaps reading from another author’s book, poem, short story or even something they may have found on the internet. The source is not important; sharing words which are meaningful or entertaining is.
