Panther Football Team In Class C Sectional Quarterfinal

This Friday night, October 24, the Hoosick Falls Central School football team (6-1) will be riding a five game winning streak into their Class C, Section Two quarterfinal match up with visiting Watervliet High School (5-2) at the Route 22 field. Hoosick Falls disposed of Class B size Cobleskill-Richmondville last Friday evening in Cobleskill to the tune of 34-20. 

In other Class C action, Schuylerville secured the Class C North division championship for themselves when they thrashed Cambridge 49-23. Cambridge was trying to gain a share of the divisional crown with a win over the Black Horses and with an Indian win a slice of the title would also have been gained by HFCS as all three schools would have ended up with 5-1 divisional marks. After Schuylerville got done trampling the Indians, the Horses ended up 6-0, HFCS ended up 5-1 and Cambridge ended up 4-2 in divisional play. Corinth got the other North division playoff spot. In sectional football play only the top eight teams make the playoff bracket with other schools playing crossover games.

Schuylerville, the top seeded North division team, will face off against fourth seed South division foe Brittonkill-Tamarac Central School. The Bengals ended up 4-3 while Schuylerville is 7-0. The top South seed is Chatham Central School (7-0) who will take on fourth seeded Corinth Central School (4-3) of the North division. Third seeded Cambridge (4-3) in the North division will travel to Fonda-Fultonville (6-1) to take on the Braves, the second seed in the South division.

HFCS will have its hands full with an experienced, senior laden Watervliet team. Watervliet’s only losses to date were to Chatham and Fonda-Fultonville, seeded ahead of the Cannoneers. The Cannoneers knocked Hoosick Falls out of the sectional semi-final in 2002. Watervliet, like HFCS, has a balanced running and passing attack. Hoosick Falls has found ways to win six of their seven games to date with their only loss in week two to Schuylerville. It’s going to take a very good effort on both sides of the ball for Hoosick Falls to beat Watervliet. But playing at home, in front of the home fans, at night, with Watervliet usually playing their home games on Saturday afternoons, may favor HFCS. I like the Panthers to win by a 21-20 margin. But cold, rainy weather on Friday night could hamper the Panthers’ passing game. In other Class C match-ups in sectional quarterfinal action I’ll take Schuylerville over a tough Brittonkill-Tamarac team, Fonda winning over a young, but improving Cambridge squad and Chatham advancing over an upset minded Corinth team, which can score a lot of points but has trouble holding other teams down. The two highest remaining seeds get home games for the sectional semi-finals. Let the games begin as the road to Syracuse’s Carrier Dome starts with first round sectional playoff action.

Mountaineer Boys Soccer Falls On Senior Night

The Berlin boys soccer team finished its regular season play on Monday by hosting Lee.  The game also served as Senior Night for Coach Art Schmich’s nine seniors.  Eric Remington, Nick Maxon, Phil Gilbert, Brent Demick, Fred Morine, Matt Tanner, Jacob Staples, Pat Harrington and John Zwack were all honored following the game.

The game did not go the way these seniors would have liked to wrap up their careers on their home field.  The visiting team scored early in the game, taking a 1-0 lead.  The Mountaineers fought hard to tie the score but could not seem to get the ball past the Lee goalie.  With 8:39 left in the first half, Lee scored again taking a 2-0 lead.

The second half was much of the same for Berlin as they attacked the Lee defense but just could not seem to get off a great shot.  The visitors would tack on another goal with 21:10 left in the game, sending the Mountaineers to defeat by a score of 3-0.

Berlin finished the season with an overall record of 10-8 and a 6-6 record in the Central Hudson Valley League.  The team received a #6 seed for the Section 2 tournament and travels to play #3 Middleburgh on Friday at 3 pm.  

The Berlin girls team received the same fate, a #6 versus #3 seed showdown at Middleburgh, but their game will be played Saturday at 3 pm.

Zakrzewskis Celebrate Their 50th Wedding Anniversary

Robert (Ski) and Phyllis Zakrzewski of Hoosick Falls celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Troy followed by a reception given by their children Karen and her husband Joseph Curran of Shaftsbury, VT, and Robert and Christine Zakrzewski, Jr. of Stillwater, NY, at the Elks Club in Troy.

 

Mr. and Mrs. Zakrzewski were married on October 25, 1958. They have five grandsons. Mr. Zakrzewski retired from the U.S. Navy in 1977 and the U.S. Postal Service in 2002. Mrs. Zakrzewski retired as a legal secretary from Holbrook and Johnston Law Office in Hoosick Falls in 2002.

Hoosick Falls Health Center’s Annual Resident And Family Picnic

The Hoosick Falls Health Center’s Annual Resident and Family Picnic was held recently with over 100 in attendance. The menu included, steamers with drawn butter, BBQ chicken, BBQ baby back ribs, smoky baked beans, fresh butter and sugar corn on the cob, a variety of homemade salads, chips, rolls and butter followed by a dessert of white and chocolate cake with icing. Entertainment was provided by Lou Gardner on the saxophone and Al Mosher on the keyboard.

The successful event was all made possible by Jane Richardson, Food Service Director, Jane Conte, Director of Nursing, Maureen Martinez, Director of Recreational Therapy, and Richard Springer, Director of Maintenance, and their staffs.

The annual picnic gives everyone a chance to meet and come together as a family.

The Hoosick Falls Health Center is an 82 bed not-for-profit skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility serving the area over 90 years.

Hoosick’s Halloween Parade

Looking for a ghoulishly good time this Halloween? Then come to the Annual Halloween Parade on Thursday, October 30, in Hoosick Falls.  Whether you join in the Parade, or just watch from the sidelines, you are sure to enjoy the many creative costumes of the parade go-ers.  The line-up for judging by members of the National Honor Society of Hoosick Falls Central School with their advisor Isabel McGuire will be at 6 pm at the Gazebo in the Village Park.  Marchers will start up Main Street at 6:15 and return to the Park for treats provided by the Town of Hoosick. Prizes in five categories will be provided by the Hoosick Falls Police Benevolent Association.

Candidates Attend Democrat Event

About 50 people attended the Democrat event held at the Sand Bar on Sunday, October 19. “Everyone had a great time,” said Hoosick Town Supervisor Marilyn Douglas. Candidates running for election in November attending were Ian McGaughey who is running against Tony Jordan for the New York State Assembly and Mike Russo, former District Director for Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand. Russo is running for the New York State Senate against Roy McDonald. Also attending the event was Rensselaer County Democrat Chairman Tom Wade.

Grafton Historical Society Exhibit

The Grafton Historical Society is sponsoring an exhibit featuring photographs of the J.A. Scriven Shirt factory at the Everett Wagar Senior Center, Route 2, Grafton.  The exhibit runs until October 28 at the Senior Center, which is open Monday through Friday from 9 am until 3 pm.  This exhibit features the people who worked there, trade cards, diary entries of seamstresses, 1855 and 1860 census data and the history of the business.  The shirt factory was located in Grafton from the mid 19th century until it burned in 1925.  Photographs include several taken by noted photographer James E. West.  There is no cost for admission to this exhibit.
