Thursday, Jan 29, 1824: Today I got Mr. Danford’s wagon and went to Lebanon. I called down to the wagon maker Wadoms to see the Wheeler woman about coming to work for us. She agreed to come Sunday next. I called to Mr. Gay’s and told him to sell Wm’s cutter if he can get thirty dollars in cash. This evening I walked down and Julia Morey came and watched with my wife and child.

Grafton Planning Board Dodges A Bullet
by Kieron Kramer
The expected brouhaha concerning Les McDermott’s proposal for a shooting range and gun store on his property at 303 Old Siek Road did not materialize at the Grafton Planning Board meeting on Monday, August 20. Only two of the people who spoke so vociferously at the public hearing last month were present, and there was no discussion about the shooting range. The reason for this turn of events was made clear at the beginning of the regular meeting when Planning Board Chairman Tom Withcuskey read a letter from McDermott withdrawing his site plan application “due to the recent personal and unfounded attacks on my character from my neighbors, or should I say, property owners.”

St. Stanislaw Society Celebrates 100 Years
by Bea Peterson
The St. Stanislaw Society (The Polish Hall) began 100 years ago as an organization made up of Catholic males of Polish descent. The “Polish Hall” was a place for members to hear the language of their homeland, to maintain Polish traditions and to socialize. The St. Stanislaw Society Women’s Auxiliary was active and supportive as well. Over the years the Society has changed with the times. While the organization still remembers the customs of Poland and maintains St. Stanislaw, the Bishop, as the guardian of the Society, it has transformed itself into a service organization that provides a social atmosphere for any adult who wishes to become a member. Today the organization has a membership of almost 600 people in 11 states. Since 1996, the St. Stanislaw Society has donated almost half a million dollars to over 80 local and regional charitable organizations. [Read more…] about St. Stanislaw Society Celebrates 100 Years

Petersburgh Town Board Action – 2015 Revaluation Planned
by Alex Brooks
Petersburgh Sole Assessor Craig Surprise urged the Board to get started on a revaluation of real property in the Town. He said the real estate market has settled down and prices are stabilizing, so he believes it’s a good time to do it. Surprise feels it has been too long since the Town last did a revaluation. He said it takes two years to do it, so the Town needs to plan now to get a 2015 reval done. The work would be done in 2013 and 2014, and the new valuations would be in place in 2015. The Board agreed to go forward with it.

Old Fashioned Travellers Pass Through Petersburgh
by David Flint
With cars and trucks whizzing by on Route 22 in Petersburgh, Ernie and Chris Bessette were in no hurry. BCS Bond Impasse Continues
by Thaddeus Flint
In what is becoming a tradition at Berlin Central School District Board meetings, the Capital Project bond authorization vote was taken once again Monday night, and, in keeping with the tradition, it once again failed to pass by the two-thirds super majority needed. In this instance only Board Member John Nash voted against the bond flotation. Even with Board Members Alan Webster Jr. and Bev Stewart absent, it was all that was needed to keep a $5 million upgrade to the District’s schools from proceeding. The project as a whole is not, though, completely stalled.
