Holcomb says surprisingly little about his courtship, marriage or his wife’s pregnancy in his daily journal. The Town of Hoosick Board meeting on Monday, February 13 was very straightforward until the Board chose to go into executive session to discuss a personnel issue. As they were leaving the Board room Councilman Bruce Patire said he had issues to be brought up under old business regarding the Armory. On that note the Board proceeded to the executive session, which lasted one hour and fifteen minutes. Upon returning the Board passed a resolution changing the Registrar of Vital Statistics payment from voucher form to salary.

Valentine’s Day was not a night of love and roses for the New Lebanon Town Board. The monthly meeting once again came a bit undone over problems with the Ethics Board, past administrations and how much the new Town Hall that doesn’t exist is costing to exist on paper.
Resident Joanna Johnson-Smith read out the Town’s own rules on Committee and Board members which require them to be at 75% of meetings or they should be dismissed. She also questioned Council Member Bruce Baldwin as to how many complaints he had faced so far that were investigated by the Ethics Board. By her count it is now four. At the Grafton Town Board meeting on Monday, February 13, Town Supervisor Ray Darling said he received an email on February 6 from Linda von der Heide, Rensselaer County’s Principal Planner, about an initiative the County is working on with FEMA. They call it a “Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan.” The idea is to upgrade culverts and bridges so as to be better prepared for the next storm and flooding event. In practice it will mean FEMA will provide money to replace small culverts with bigger ones, or do other construction that would improve drainage and protect roads in a flooding event.

Billed as a “One Day. One Cause. One Community” event, Hoosipalooza lived up to the hype. Crowds were small, but everyone who participated had a great time! It began at the Nirvana Day Spa with scented candles, mellow music and guided meditation at 8 am. Very relaxing! Then there was coffee and breakfast at Bagels & Brew. At 9 winter tales were read to the little ones at the Cheney Library where there was also a display of beautiful handmade quilts and knitted items. At 10 kids put faces on balloons at Thorpe’s Pharmacy, and Julia Baker, Sandra Castro-Baker and John Hyde provided a fantastic hour of beautiful violin and guitar music at St. Mark’s Church. The music ranged from the classical to theater and movie themes to the Beatles!

A Prayer For Jane

The Berlin Town Board meeting on Thursday, February 9, began on a distressing note when Town Supervisor Rob Jaeger asked for prayers from everyone for Jane Fitzgerald. “Jane is in Albany Med and has had a couple of go-arounds,” he said. Jane Fitzgerald (aka Auntie Jane) had been a fixture at Town Board meetings for decades until her health kept her from attending regularly last year. There were meetings when the only sensible thing said in the entire meeting was one of Auntie Jane’s powerful one-liners.

I think it’s time to put a limit on the length of letters to the editor.
I do not pay $30 a year to be held hostage by a few disgruntled individuals.

The Village of Hoosick Falls Board meeting began with a presentation by the HAYC3 Youth Impact, Jr. team. Members Aleah, Karli, Rosabell and Sam made a presentation to the Board encouraging them and those attending the meeting to “Support the Heart and Soul of Hoosick Falls by Shopping Local.” As it was Valentine’s Day they had packets of sweets for Board members and everyone else in the room.
