The weather was perfect for Flag Day ceremonies at Post #40 American Legion headquarters in Hoosick Falls on Friday, June 14. Legion members, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and the Hoosick Falls Community Band were all part of the program. Guests were welcomed by Post Commander Bernie Guerard. Boy Scouts and Legion members together lowered the flag from its pole and folded it.

Reynolds Foundation Distributes $12,600

On Saturday, June 15, Norma Brenenstuhl and Armand Rousseau distributed checks to nine local agencies totaling $12,600. The checks were presented to the Hoosick Falls Community Band for operating expenses, the Town of Hoosick Historical Society, the Hoosick Area Church Association (HACA) Food Pantry, the Hoosick Falls Girl Scout Service program and the Hoosick Falls Girl Scout Day Camp, the Cheney Library Children’s Reading program, the Wood Park Residents Association, the North Hoosick Fire Dept. Disaster Shelter Fund and the local Reynolds Foundation.

HFCS Board Meeting – Asst. Principal Lamy Resigns

The resignation of Brett Lamy, Assistant Principal of the High School and Athletic Director, was accepted by the Hoosick Falls School Board at its meeting on June 13. At the same meeting both of the half time positions that he held this year were abolished. A decision to eliminate the Assistant Principal position was made as a budget cutting measure last winter when the budget was being constructed.

Berlin Town Board Action – Enforcing Peace And Order

A public hearing on a revision to the Town of Berlin Dog Law, Local Law #2 of 2010, and on a new Dog Ordinance was held at 7 pm on Thursday, June 13, before the regular Town Board meeting. The hearing was well attended and, although it only lasted 15 minutes, included a wide ranging discussion of dog and dog owner behavior in Berlin.

Stephentown Town Board Action – Paint, Planners And A Counsel

The Stephentown Town Board thinks the Town Hall is in need of some refurbishment. Town Supervisor Larry Eckhardt believes the interior has not been painted since it was built. Therefore, at their meeting on Monday, June 17, the Board authorized the publication of a Request for Proposals to paint the interior of the building and carry out some minor repairs. No specifications will be included. The proposals are due in the Town Clerk’s Office by Friday, July 12.

Grafton Planning Board Action – Silence Should Be Golden

Three public hearings were held before the regular Grafton Planning Board meeting on Monday, June 17. At 6:15 the subject was the Edelmann/MacNaughton major subdivision application; at 6:30 it was the Lawrence Meracle minor subdivision, and at 6:45 it was the Halloran-Minbiole lot line adjustment. None of these applications were controversial or opposed, and the comments were very brief.
Fifteen minutes were allotted to each hearing. The hearings should have been only five minutes long. Apparently the members of the Planning Board abhor a verbal vacuum. Hoosick Planning Board Action – Big Moose Has Plans

Emil Baker, owner of the Big Moose Deli and Country Store on Route 7, appeared before the Town of Hoosick Planning Board for a second time on Monday, June 18. Baker has acquired the house and property next door to his store. He said the house will be used for storage and the lot in the back and on the side of the house will be used for parking. A split rail fence will define the parking area. The expanded area can hold 20 vehicles.

BCS Board Meeting – Fare Thee Well

Tuesday was the final monthly meeting for three of the Berlin School District’s Board members, and, true to form, it began on a sour note when John Nash, Bev Stewart and Alan Webster Jr. failed to show up even though they were to be recognized for their service.

Kay ten Kraft
Cherry Plain – Kay ten Kraft, born on July 25, 1951, in Port Jervis, NY, died suddenly at her home in Cherry Plain, NY, on Thursday, June 13, 2013.
Kay was an avid knitter and fiber artist and the proprietor of Sliver Moon Farm. With her exquisitely hand-dyed yarns she was a fixture on the craft fair circuit in the Northeast and a regular member of several knitting circles in the region. She actively volunteered at theater productions and animal clinics.
She is survived by her husband, J. Nicholas Adams, and her three children, Matthew Cahill and partner Monica Bliss of Pittsfield, MA, Rebecca Brody and husband Ben Brody of Southampton, MA, and stepson Jason Adams and partner Hensley Evans of Rosendale, NY. She leaves her beloved granddaughters, Jordan, Rachel, Zoey and Aria Cahill and Kaia Adams, as well as Kay’s “adopted” children, Maggie Pesce and daughter Yzzi and Biffy Cahill. Kay also leaves nieces Jennifer Kraft and husband Michael Leavey of Atlanta, GA, Sarah Kraft and husband Christopher Peterson of Athens, GA, and cousin Sonny Pfundheller and his wife Suzanne and their sons Jason and Jackson of Phoenix, AZ.

Logan Ryan Bettis
Hoosick – Logan Ryan Bettis, 22, passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2013, at Albany Medical Center. Logan was happy and always had a smile despite the challenges he faced throughout his life. He resided on Cobble Hill Road, Hoosick, NY, with his parents James and Michele (Moore) Bettis and siblings Dalton and Devin Bettis.
Logan was born on May 13, 1991, in Bennington, VT. He graduated from Hoosick Falls Central School in 2010. He enjoyed listening to music and playing video games. Logan especially enjoyed going to the movies with his best friend Samantha Conn.
Survivors other than his parents James and Michele, brother Dalton and sister Devin include his grandparents, Joseph and Elaine Bettis Sr. of Hoosick Falls and his grandmother, Anita Moore of Bennington, along with several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is pre-deceased by his grandfather, Thomas Moore, and his uncle, David Bettis.
Funeral services are Friday, June 21, at 10 am from the Immaculate Conception Church on Main Street in Hoosick Falls. Burial will follow the service at Maple Grove Cemetery in Hoosick Falls.
Relatives and friends may call at the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090, on Thursday evening from 5 to 7 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Northeast Muscular Dystrophy Association through the funeral home.
