A number of residents are vehemently displeased with the Berlin Central School Board of Education’s decision to close Grafton Elementary. In what was seemingly an ordinary budget workshop on Tuesday, March 9, the Board elected, 4-3, with Board Members Tom Morelli, Beverly Stewart and Paul Greene voting against the proposal, to close the Grafton Elementary School in June. While Superintendant of Schools Charlotte Gregory cited enrollment decline and economic issues as the reasons for consolidation, many residents believe the District should have considered other options.

Newell Subdivisions Was Topic At Grafton Planning Board Meeting

Before the regular Planning Board meeting on Monday, March 15, there were two public hearings regarding Scott Newell applications to subdivide two pieces of property that he owns. The first hearing pertained to 204 Pond View Road. The piece of property isn’t lakeside and is currently 13.25 acres. Newel wants to divide the property into 6.83 and 6.42 acre lots. David Hunt of Jay Hakes Road was present to express his concern about the environment and make sure that with the dividing of these properties no swamp or forest would be disturbed. Last Chance To Register For Shatford Little League
Shatford Little League will be conducting its final registration for the 2010 season Saturday, March 20, from 10 am to noon at the Shatford Park Little League field in New Lebanon. Children living in Eastern Rensselaer and Columbia Counties who will be between the ages of 5 and 14 as of May 1 are eligible to play.

TRACs Is Moving Ahead

The community coalition to combat alcohol, tobacco and drug abuse among youth in the Berlin school district is taking shape and moving ahead. Following a breakfast meeting on February 4 at which John Underwood gave a rousing call to action, The TRACs (Together Reducing Alcohol and Drugs in our Communities) group has continued to meet on the second Tuesday of the month. Grafton Community Library Receives Community Art$ Grant
The Grafton Community Library is pleased to announce that the Library has been awarded a Community Art$ Grant for its Summer Arts and Reading Program. The Arts Center of the Capital Region offers the Community Art$ Grant program to eligible community organizations in Albany, Rensselaer and Schenectady counties for community arts and cultural projects.
