December 16, 2011 By eastwickpress

by Bea Peterson
The Hoosick Falls Village Board meeting on Tuesday evening, December 13, began on a light note. Sam Wickenden, Karli Granger and Aleah Stowell, in elves hats, addressed the Board. Aleah told them they were from HAYC3’s  Youth Impact Jr. program. It’s a leadership program for kids who like to help the community. Sam told the Board that the program helped the community by putting a bird feeder in the front of the Wood Park Senior building and they had a Welcome Desk for the Village cleanup day. They also handed out candy to the community on Halloween and drew Thanksgiving pictures for the community in November. [Read more…] about Village of Hoosick Falls Board Meeting – Antlers For All

Sierra Bailey In The Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade
by Kieron Kramer
The first four resolutions passed at the Rensselaer County Legislature’s regular meeting on Tuesday, December 13, recognized the achievements of student-athletes from Hoosick Falls. Two teams were honored, the Hoosick Falls Central School Girls Soccer team and the HFCS Football team, and two individuals were honored.
The first resolution of the night told the story of Sierra Bailey, a senior cheerleader at HFCS. According to the resolution, Sierra has been cheerleading since the age of five. At seventeen she tried out for a spot on the Varsity Cheer Squad over the summer at a cheerleading camp and at the age of seventeen her dream came true. Although she tried out with no expectations of making the team, when the results came back she was one of five hundred accepted to take part in the synchronized cheerleading squad during the 85th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday, November 24, 2011.

HAYC3 (Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition) is seeking support from the community to continue its programming for youth and families.  Although HAYC3 received a federal grant this year, the funds are restricted and cannot be used for recreation programs, after school activities or basic facility needs such as heat, electricity and maintenance.  Community investment is needed to keep the center operating at its current capacity.

Kids Helping Kids

December 16, 2011 By eastwickpress

James Harrington, Director of the Ugandan Water Project, had the Hoosick Falls Elementary School students singing and dancing on Monday morning, November 28. They were dancing to African music and singing a few Ugandan words to go with the music. They were excited to learn about another culture, another country. They were also astounded to learn that in Uganda many girls their age don’t go to school because they have to walk three to five miles twice a day to get water for their families. They let out a collective yuck when they saw in the visual presentation what passes for drinking water in Uganda. They agreed with Harrington that the water source looked like a big mud puddle.
