Bronnie Powers brought her concern regarding use of the Planning Board Family Subdivision law to the Town of Hoosick Board meeting on Monday, September 8. She had previously expressed her concern to the Planning Board. During Monday’s meeting the Board agreed to hold a Family Subdivision Community meeting on Thursday, September 18, at 7 pm in the HAYC3 Armory. On Saturday, September 6, the Sandbar was packed with folks of all ages. They were gathered to celebrate the lives of four people who were taken from them too soon. It began 15 years ago with Karen McGovern. She was a vibrant and valiant fighter who succumbed to cancer at age 32. On Monday morning, September 8, as part of Rensselaer County’s monthly Honor a Deceased Veteran Program, Thomas G. Restino was recognized. Receiving the many honors bestowed on his father was Justice Tom Restino, Jr. The ceremony, which began with Posting of the Colors by Lansingburgh veterans, was held in the Legislative Chambers. The event honored Restino’s life as a family man, veteran and community servant.

August 13
Hoosick Grange had a very successful Hot Dog Roast. Master David Cornell welcomed everyone. After a delicious dinner, we played Bingo. We had a lot of prizes and just about everyone got a prize. We all enjoyed the games and visiting with each other.
The Lecturer announced that next meeting was election of officers.
August 27
Hoosick Grange had election of officers. David Cornell was elected Master again. All the other officers were elected but two, to be filled later. The Master took care of new business. Then we had a short Lecturer program.
The Lecturer asked the Grangers how many remember the boxing match, that was broadcast on radio, between Joe Louis and German boxer Max Schmeling. This was held in Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, NY. There were 66,277 people who paid for the pleasure of watching in person. Also, there was the largest radio audience in history. This match was to be a 12-rounder. Do you remember how many rounds they went? The storyteller tells us about her father who was very interested in the fight and trying to get her mother interested. Her father was very close to the radio; all of a sudden he was on his feet. Her mother came in just about this time. Her father said, heck-fire, it’s all over. Her mother said, “You mean I missed the first round?” Her father said, “You missed the whole dang thing.” Mother said, “I don’t see how a fight between two champions could be over so quick.” So dad showed her – he punched and jabbed, threw a left hook, then a right to the head, dancing on his toes, circling mom and a left to the jaw – he missed where he was aiming and, guess what, he hit mom and down she went. That was the end of the 12-rounder and dad’s boxing.
The Lecturer had a couple of jokes and a story on Goose Wars. If you have ever been afraid of a goose biting you, this was a funny story. The end of this story was told at the next meeting, on September 10, which was also the planning meeting for the year. Martha Babbitt was in charge of refreshments.
David Cornell had some delicious refreshments for the August 27 evening.
On Sunday September 14, First United Church, Presbyterian in Hoosick Falls will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the ordination of our pastor, Rev. Donna Elia.
Donna Elia grew up in Philadelphia, PA, and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education from LaSalle University. After teaching in the School District of Philadelphia for several years, she felt a call to ordained ministry and went to Princeton Theological Seminary, receiving her Master of Divinity degree in 1989. After graduation, she was called to be pastor of Tribes Hill Presbyterian Church, where she served until 1995. She then served as associate pastor and then as acting head of staff of First Presbyterian Church in Albany. In October 2000, Rev. Elia accepted the position of executive director of Troy Area United Ministries, an ecumenical organization committed to seeking the social and spiritual well being of people in Rensselaer County. Since January 2007 she has been the stated supply pastor of First United Church in Hoosick Falls.
During the 10:30 service, special music will be provided by Ms. Peggy Shalit on violin and the First United Choir will present the anthem “I Give My Life.” A reception will follow at 11:30 in the Church hall.

At a special Town of Hoosick Board meeting on Thursday, August 28, the Board approved the recommendation from Laberge Group to accept the low bid from William L. Watson Co., Inc. of Eden, NY, for rehabilitation of the Weir Reynolds Community Pool at a cost of $673,800. Bids were also received from DeBrino Caulking Associated, Inc. of Castleton, NY, for $695,722 and from Patterson-Stevens, Inc. of Tonawanda, NY, for $746,360.

According to the internet Barn Quilt History, “The concept of barn quilts began with Donna Sue Groves and her wish to honor her mother, Maxine, and her Appalachian heritage by having a painted quilt hung on her barn in Adams County, Ohio. As is often the case, good ideas fall by the wayside when work and other obligations intervene. Donna Sue mentioned the project from time to time for several years until she was encouraged by her friends to go ahead and paint that quilt square. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the first week in August, Hoosick Falls history was made when 13 Town of Hoosick men who were killed in action in the Civil War were honored as Voice of a Vet’s Tribute Flag (Liberty) flew over the sites where these men are buried.

The Tractor and Agriculture Show is an exciting feature at the sixth annual Pumpkinpalooza community-wide event. Antique and vintage tractors, horse drawn farm equipment and implements, as well as contemporary machinery, will be on display in Walter A. Wood Park on Saturday, September 27, from 8 am to 3 pm.
