Hate Crime In Stephentown

Alan Schmelkin has many happy memories of spending summers and vacations in Stephentown while growing up with his brothers Neil, Martin and Steven. In fact Stephentown has been “a sacred place” to his family ever since his grandfather Joseph Schmelkin purchased the Cranston mansion on Cranston Hill Road back in 1919. Alan’s father and brothers grew up in that house and attended the one-room schoolhouse that is now the Stephentown Memorial Library. Alan recalled that his father, Benjamin, in 1989 organized a reunion there of the Class of 1919-20.

Q & A With Congressman Scott Murphy In Hoosick Falls

US Congressman Scott Murphy, of the 20th District, addressed about 25 people Tuesday, June 1, in a Congress-On-The-Corner session at noon at the NYS Armory in Hoosick Falls. He told the group that he was interested in economic development for the rural areas of his district that covers 137 towns from Lake Placid to Poughkeepsie. He’s concerned about the farmers, he said. “Milk prices are at historic lows.”

Berlin Bank Robber Gets 7 To 14 Years More

Chad Rubin of North Adams had two years to go in the 8½ year prison sentence he received for robbing the Berlin Bank in June of 2004. Now he is probably stuck with an additional seven to fourteen years. That’s the sentence Judge Jonathan Nichols pronounced on Wednesday to Rubin for conspiring while in Green Haven prison to rob the bank a second time and to cause the murder of bank employees.

Remembering Fallen Heroes In Hoosick Falls

For the past few weeks Hoosick Falls has been getting spruced up for Memorial Day. HFCS youngsters have picked up litter, new white lines are on the streets, flags are on the light poles, planters have fresh flowers in them and grounds have been cleaned up everywhere. The weather on Monday, May 31, was perfect for the parade and ceremonies honoring service men and women who gave their lives for their country.

Grafton Planning Board Action – May 2010

The Sylvan Way project, also known as the Stonybrook development, was the headline news at the May 17 Planning Board meeting. The developer, David Lipinski, reported that he plans to have the power lines in and the road widened by the end of July. There was discussion about the top coat of the road. Lipinski said he has been working closely with Highway Superintendent Herb Hasbrouck to make sure he is complying with Grafton’s road specifications. Hoosick Falls Country Club 100th Anniversary

On Sunday, June 6, the Hoosick Falls Country Club will celebrate its 100th Anniversary from 2 to 4 pm. The public is cordially invited to this event. There will be refreshments and music by The Brewsters. A presentation will be made at 2:30 pm.

PTA Founders’ Day Award Winner

To honor the memory and keep alive the spirit which motivated the action of the PTA founders, and in recognition of all of Hoosick Falls’ volunteers, the HFCS PTA will be hosting a year-end thank you celebration on Monday, June 7, at 6:30 pm in the Elementary School Library. Refreshments will be served; a brief year-end business meeting will take place following the celebration. PTA members and non-members are welcome.

The Stephanie Flint Book Club Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary With Kevin O’Hara

The Stephanie Flint Book Club, celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year, is hosting an appearance at the Berlin Free Town Library by Kevin O’Hara. The acclaimed author from nearby Pittsfield, MA, will read from and speak about his experience in writing his latest book, A Lucky Irish Lad, that was released in February.
