Stephentown – Laura A. Meddaugh McEwan, 85, of Cranston Hill Road, Stephentown, NY, died on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, MA, after being stricken at her home.
Born November 15, 1924, in Stephentown, she was the daughter of the late Orin and Mabel Clifford Meddaugh. She was the loving wife of the late William G. McEwan, who died on June 13, 1987. They were married in Stephentown on March 23, 1946.

Shots Fired In May 9 Car Chase In Hoosick Falls

At 4:15 am, May 9, a Hoosick Falls Police officer attempted to pull over a vehicle driven by Bryan E. Purcell, age 36, of 60 Tory Hill Road. According to Police Chief Robert Ashe, Purcell refused to stop and the officer pursued the vehicle up Cummings St. At some point Purcell drove the car off the road, traveling across lots. Berlin Town Board Action – Petition Filed For Vote On Berlin Lumber Purchase

There will be another referendum in Berlin on the use of the Capital Reserve Fund to purchase the Berlin Lumber property for use as a municipal center. A petition with 106 signatures was presented to the Board at the Town Board meeting on Thursday, May 13. The Board must respond to the petition, which met all the requirements in form and substance. According to Town Supervisor Rob Jaeger, a special referendum must be held no sooner than 60 days and no later than 75 days from the date of the filing of the petition. The Board agreed that Monday is a good day on which to hold the vote. Board Member Carl Greene said, “It is critical to have as many people vote as possible, that’s what voting is all about.” The Board authorized Jaeger and Town Clerk Anne Maxon to schedule the vote for either Monday, July 12, 19 or 26.

Infant Death In Hoosick Falls Investigated As Homicide

Ina McElheny, the four month old daughter of Melinda Anders and Joseph McElheny of 3 River St. was rushed by ambulance to Bennington Hospital on Thursday, May 13. Petersburgh Town Board Action – Personal Use Of Town Equipment

A citizen came to the Petersburgh Town Board meeting this month to report that Highway Superintendent Ray Harrison had used a Town loader to put a vehicle and some old farm equipment onto a trailer to be sold for scrap metal. He said he thought this was an improper private use of Town equipment.
Town Supervisor Peter Schaaphok thanked him for bringing the matter to the attention of the Town Board and said the Board would discuss it in executive session after the public meeting.

New Lebanon Faces Second Lawsuit

In April, Howard Commander, the owner of the Lebanon Valley Speedway, filed a lawsuit against the Town. Recently, Robert Mittnight followed a similar path, publicly announcing his complaint against New Lebanon. He stated, in a brief presentation at the Town Board meeting on May 10, that the Town’s Zoning Enforcement Officer and ZBA apparently had no right to treat him as it did. Stephentown Town Board Action – Simple Matters Become Complex

Simple matters, when caught up in government and legal red tape, can get mighty complex. The Stephentown Town Board didn’t have much on their plate at their meeting on Monday evening, but a couple of issues they did deal with seemed to be a lot more complicated than one would have thought.
