Berlin Fire Company Installation

The Berlin Fire Company held its Installation Banquet this year at the Poestenkill Fire Hall. “We thought we’d try something a little different this year,” explained Berlin Fire Chief Billy Osterhout. Although the trip across the Plank Road with on and off snow squalls may have reduced attendance slightly at the event held on February 27, most agreed that the change of venue to Poestenkill’s spacious and sparkling hall, along with a splendid roast beef dinner served up hot and tasty by members of the Poestenkill Fire Company, was a very pleasant variation.

TRACs Meeting On March 9

Representatives from the Sheriff’s Department and the New York State Police will attend the next meeting of our community drug and alcohol prevention coalition, TRACs,  on Tuesday, March 9, at 5:30 pm at the Seventh Day Baptist Church in Berlin. The group will discuss ways to work together to reduce the incidence of alcohol and drug abuse among teens in the community.  Community members who are interested in learning more about how our towns can work more closely with local law enforcement are invited to attend. Hoosick ZBA Approves Business With Conditions

The Town of Hoosick Zoning Board of Appeals meeting took place this past Monday evening, March 1, in the Hoosick Falls Armory with Chairman Jim Hoag calling the meeting to order at 7 pm. After the Pledge of Allegiance, Hoag opened a public hearing on the Haskins Fuel Service business wanting to change the use of its property on Route 22 in North Hoosick from residential use to use as a business office. Adjoining neighbors to the property had been contacted by the Board and asked to air any concerns regarding this issue.

Berlin Fourth Of July Parade Committee Sets 2010 Theme

The Berlin Fourth of July Parade Committee cordially invites the public to participate in its annual parade to be held this year on Monday, July 5.  The theme of this year’s celebration is “Old-Time TV.”  Decorate a float, clean up your car, dress up or walk with your favorite group.  Whatever your imagination can bring, share it with everybody with an entry in the parade and maybe even take home a prize!

Stephentown Open Burning Regulations

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) implemented a new open burning regulation that took effect in October 2009. As part of that regulation open burning is banned between March 16 and May 15 each year. The regulation also specifies what can and cannot be burned. An Immodest Proposal

The Berlin Central School District wants to close the Grafton school and bus the Grafton kids down to the crumbling Berlin school building to save money for the district taxpayers. Saving money will be important, especially as the loss of a local school will probably have a strong negative effect on the Town of Grafton’s economy as the desirability to locate in Grafton plummets, property values decline and tax revenues drop.
